Carpet directly under the rear windshield!!!!

Hi, I am a window Tinter and I tinted one of my customers cars, a 2019 Ford Fusion. I have tinted plenty of rear windshields and have never had a problem until this customer came back a week after the tint installation and showed me his carpet under the rear windshield. He claims that it must be our fault because he never goes back in that area and we did it recently. But the thing is that we only use soap and water for our solution. This has never happened before and I Am stuck between what to do. Is this even our fault? I want to be true and honest with good customer service, but I also don’t want to be a victim of one of those kind of people trying to get something for “free”, if he is lying. Please does anyone have any info or experience of this at all???

Hi steve. In all my years here on the Ford  Fusion Forum, I can only recall one other issue/complaint about the rear package shelf carpeting/cover. Unfortunately, I can not recall exactly what that individual complained about at the moment.

Perhaps another member will jump in with more information. And if I can find the thread or remember, I will post back.

Keep us updated and good luck.

bbf, could this be what you're referring to?

Hi drolds1. Yes, that was it. Thanks for finding it.

Steve, although there are no photos in that other thread for comparison, it sounds like that other member had a similar issue to what your photos depict. The other member did not mention much side information, such as whether they had tinting performed etc.

Ironically, I humorously mentioned variables in that other thread. One being does "your cat rides back there on the package shelf"? I see what looks like it could be cat or some other type of pet "hair" in your photos. But that is only speculation. I wonder if they have a cat that rides back there (and scratches/digs into it), and never noticed the damage until they were inspecting the rear window after you tinted it?

Considering the fact the OP in the other thread never came back after those posts, it wouldn't surprise me if that was the outcome with their "problem". Again, only speculation.

However, I agree with you that "soap and water" should not normally cause the damage shown in your photos. Therefore, as in that other thread, I would recommend the vehicle owner take the car back to their Ford Dealer and have them diagnose and possibly repair it. Hopefully it is still within the 36,000 mile part of the 3 year/36,000 Mile New Car Warranty. See what they say and go from there.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Good catch!  Having 2 cats, I'm aware of what damage they can wreak and that fuzzy shelf is something they'd love to knead on.  I never made the connection.?

Steve, this not your fault.  the material is disintegrating from UV exposure.  perhaps you compressed the material when you did your work which exposed the defective material.  see my thread as well

I have a 2019 Ford Fusion that I bought new in 2020.  It has 47,450 miles on it, so my original warranty has expired.  I have an extended warranty that I believe only covers mechanical problems.  The black shelf behind the back seat is disintegrating, and everything that touches it turns black from what I assume is dye.  I stopped at a Ford dealer today and they are at a loss as to explain what the problem is, they all said they had never heard of a car having this issue.  They are checking with my extended warranty, but I'm sure I'm going to have to pay for the repair/replacement.  Does anyone else have this issue and how were you able to resolve it?

By the way, I have no pets (I'm allergic to dogs and cats), nor have I tinted any windows in my Ford Fusion.  I also live in Southwest Missouri.

Hi Lorene and welcome to the Ford Fusion Forum. As you can see in this thread, there are others who have experienced this issue. It seems to be more of an issue with some 2020 models and a few 2019's. Blind Internet diagnosis seems to point to some batches of the material being sub-standard/defective, but that is just a guess.

How to resolve it depends on the situation. If the vehicle is still within the 3 year/36,000 mile New Vehicle Warranty, scheduling a service appointment and having your Ford  Dealership replace it under warranty would be the answer. One member did just that and had it replaced under warranty.

Unfortunately, as in your case, most Fusions will now be outside that New Vehicle Warranty period. In that case, scheduling a service appointment and seeing if your Ford Dealership can perform an accommodation such as customer satisfaction type of extended warranty would be the next step. This would be a decision made by the Dealership on a case-by-case basis, or by them contacting Ford. You can also contact Ford Customer Relations directly to ask if there is something they may be able to do to help.

In most cases, an ESP Plan/extended warranty would not cover an issue like this. But do not take my word for it, see what the Service Manager at your Dealership tells you.

Unfortunately, in addition...Most members who have posted in this thread have been a "one and done" type of thing. They have come here, registered, posted once to complain, then never come back to offer any more information as to what they did, what the final outcome was etc.

Your best course of action would be to schedule a service appointment and see what your Dealership can do, if anything. And also contact Ford Customer Relations.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

I'm sorry it's taken so long for me to update you on my problem with the issue of the upholstery/carpet disintentagrating on the shelf behind the back seat of my 2019 Ford Fusion. I was in contact with an employee at the local Ford Dealership, Wehr Ford and RVs in Mountain Grove MO about this issue, and I kept calling him every week or two to get an update.  He kept telling me he hadn't been able to reach anyone, hadn't received an answer, etc.  When I called last week, I was informed he had left the Ford dealership, but the person I was talking to said they would reach out to him and get an update.  Well I guess the update was that the only progress he made on getting my issue resolved, was finding out that my Extended Warranty covers things like the driveshaft, etc., and doesn't cover the fabric on the back window shelf.  So the person I spoke with last week said he would try to help me.  He had not been able to get anyone on the phone to help him, so I asked if I should try to call Ford.  He said sure, it can't hurt.  I was transferred from one dept to another at the number for Ford Pro Team, 800-343-5338, and spending most of the time on the phone on hold, I was disconnected after 47 minutes.  They all seemed sympathetic and concerned about getting me to the right person.  When I was disconnected I called back.  The person who answered couldn't find my case number, didn't know who I talked to, but finally transferred me to "Caseholder Yolanda."  She ws short and impatient with me, said she couldn't help me, that the dealer needs to reach out to the "field service engineers."  I finally gave up and called the mechanic at the Ford dealership who "inherited" this problem from the former employee.  I am now waiting on a callback from him.  The thing is, when I have an issue I don't get discouraged and give up; I get stubborn.   I'll keep you informed on my progress, in getting this matter resolved.  If ANYONE has any info or helpful advice that might resolve my problem I would sure appreciate it.

Wow! I went to put a sticker in my back window and my hand came out black and covered in fibers. I also have a 2020 Fusion on Long Island without rear tinting and that material is disintegrating. Does anyone know what it’s made from is it toxic? What’s the fastest way to fix it?
