A $250 Oil Filter!!??

My first oil change is coming up and I was perusing different offerings when I stumbled across this $250 K&N Lifetime Billet oil filter! https://www.knfilters.com/ss-2011-oil-filter-billet

I calculated that if I keep the Sport for the next 75,000 miles until I hit 100,000 (changing the oil every 5,000 miles) and at $15 for a disposable K&N filter, it would cost almost the same as buying the $250 lifetime filter.

I also found a review here that explains how billet oil filters potentially offer better filtration than conventional ones: https://www.enginelabs.com/tech-stories/a-close-look-into-billet-oil-filters/

Just curious if anyone here has ever used a billet filter?

Hi piratepress. My personal opinion, based on experience...No, don't. An oil filter is a relatively simple, disposable device which does not need an expensive, complicated replacement, which you will now need to clean every time you perform an oil change before you can finish the oil change and use your car.

I read your links. Seems to me it takes a simple oil change procedure and turns it into something far more complicated than need be. Instead of quickly installing a clean, new filter, you now need to take the time to clean (and probably repeatedly clean) a "reusable filter". Adding time, complexity, and the costs of cleaning fluids to the price of an oil filter. And no, it does not filter the oil better than a Motorcraft or other OEM oil filter.

You can purchase the Motorcraft oil filters for $8-$10 (or use the K&N if you prefer), and have a nice, simple oil change process. Sometimes the simplest way is best.

So avoid complication. That is one man's opinion, for what it is worth.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

For the life of me I don’t understand this search for the perfect oil filter.  OEM does the job perfectly up to normal change intervals.  And you get no benefits beyond that.  But the risks are pretty big not using an OEM filter.

I’ll stick with cheap Motorcraft filters just like Ford says.

This seems to be an answer to a question that nobody asked.  If you look over the directions for  cleaning the housing and inspecting the element, it sounds quite tedious.  The element has to cleaned in a parts washer or with filter cleaner (an additional expense).  Then it has to be blown dry with compressed air.  If compressed air isn't available, it has to be fully air-dried.   So, a half-hour job can become a whole-day affair.  What if you have to go somewhere later and your element isn't dry yet?

Even top fuel dragsters, with thousands of HP, don't use these.  Who's going to see your 'bling' oil filter anyway?

If you are only planning on keeping the car to 100,000 miles, you really don't even need to change the oil filter at all.  It will likely easily make it to 100K miles on the same filter if you just keep changing the oil normally and especially if you're changing it as often as 5000 miles.

Now if you want something decent to pass on to the next user, that's a different story.
