Recall 21S12: More Takata Airbag Stuff

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I just received a Safety Recall Notice 21S12 to replace the driver airbag in my 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. Apparently it can explode. And there are no parts currently available. And the letter says Ford is NOT issuing instructions to stop driving the vehicle. As such, the Ford hotline says Ford is not providing rental vehicle coverage for this issue while we await parts.

Has anyone contacted their dealer and had any luck getting a rental car?

Hi mirak. Perhaps availability is currently on a regional basis, but the parts are available. I had the drivers side airbag replaced under the recall last week, in my MKZ.

Can not speak to the rental car/loaner situation, as that would currently  be at the Dealers discretion for the Fusion and Milan. It is doubtful any Ford Dealer would offer a long term loaner/rental if they do not know when parts will be available.

However, it never hurts to ask.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Check out this for rental info.

Rental vehicles will be provided if you ask, according to Ford…I haven’t called for my car yet, if they can get me in with a few days that’s fine, but if it’s longer than that, I want a rental. If sounds like Ford is not anticipating a long delay.

I checked with my dealer yesterday.  They have no parts in, so I had him take my information and put me on the waiting list.  He didn't know if the wait time was days, weeks or months.  I asked about a rental/loaner but he said that as of now they have received no guidance from Ford about rentals.  He seemed to be of the opinion that there was really nothing wrong with the driver's side airbag initiator, and that Ford just decided to change them because they were made by the same company (Takata?)  that made the passenger's side initiators. That doesn't sound very realistic to me.  I don't think Ford would go to that great of an expense to fix something that isn't broken.  The service manager also told me that the driver's side fix should only take about an hour to accomplish.  So, for now I'm just biding my time waiting for the parts to arrive.  I'll keep everyone posted.

Ford tried to weasel out of this recall by filing an appeal with the NHTSA.  NHTSA denied it and Ford must now proceed with the recall repairs.

I'm taking mine in on Monday for an "inspection".  They said they need to do this before they order the parts.

At this point I'm not comfortable driving this vehicle, my teenager is the primary driver.
If the parts are available and the repair can be completed in a week or so, I can be patient.  But anything longer and I'm going to insist that Ford provide a rental.

@Dwebs262 - Thanks for that document.  Tells us all we need to know.

Just got back from the dealer and they did the inspection on the airbag, I think they just need to get the serial number off the airbag before they can order the replacement.

I asked about the rental and they pushed back a little but then I told him to keep reading the document that Dwebs262 provided.
NOT the same recall document that us owners received.

Anyway, I pretty much insisted on a rental and I drove out of there with an Edge.
Advisor said it could take a week or more to get the replacement part in.  I figured if they are paying $44/day for my rental they will be more motivated to prioritize my repair.
Otherwise, they could take their time and I'm at the bottom of the list.
I did have to sign a form that says I would not drive the car but for now I've left it at the dealer.
