Replacing Rear Shocks

There is no upper control arm. You remove the lower 2 bolts and remove the upper bush to remove the shock. Then you can remove the shock nut from the bush.

Because you are not replacing any of the suspension assembly it shouldn't require an alignment but check your tires for unusual wear over the next few drives.

Thanks for the info. I only asked about the upper arm because my shop manual said there was one. I think I left something loose on my back passenger side, I did both sides and went to go for a drive and there was a clunking sound coming from the trunk area on the passenger side. I will be pulling that side off again to see what I did wrong. And what is it with the 18 mm and 15 mm? A 15 you almost always have to buy separate in a socket, and I lost my 18 mm Impact socket. I had to go to home depot to get them both as single sockets. Harbor freight in store only has 19mm and up for impact single sockets, and parts places are to high priced. Even with the little annoying things this is a rather fun car to work on. Wish there were more aftermarket parts made for it though. There's no way to get say a turbo for a S trim or maybe stuff a V6 into it someway ?

I also had a knock from the back passenger side, before 3 year warranty expired. Changed the shock and the upper bush (under warranty). Knock has gone.

Your 2019 should be under warranty. Recommendation: always change the upper bush when replacing shocks.

Make sure the shocks top nut is tight! The clunking sound is common and tightening that nut generally rectifies the issue. Test to see if its even the slightest bit loose while the car is on the ground (Jacking it up transfers the weight and the issue goes away) It can be done in the car if you have one of the sockets that allows passthrough in the center and if you replaced with aftermarket shocks the nut is sometimes not as wide as the OEM so it can be shimmed with a couple washers so it protrudes more for better access.

i dont modify my cars anymore, not worth it so cant help you there

I'm doing the rear shocks on my 2019 Fusion S, and was wanting to know if I really have to remove the upper control arm. And if I do then do I need to get an alignment?

Hi MTLEADER. As twiggy144 mentioned, your 2019 Fusion is/may be still within the 3 year/36,000 mile New Vehicle Warranty. Is there a reason you did not have the shocks replaced under warranty?

Good luck.

Warranty is up on my car sad but I like working on things. Just not to up to date with a lot of the things on these newer cars. It was the top nut on my shock I used a Crowfoot  and my crescent wrench and now it rides so dam nice. So much less road noise than before. I am goin to be doing the front struts next. There are a few things I need to know. I have always bought Full assembly's but there are none for my car except Monroe's and Motorcraft's and then some cheap crap I wont mess with. So I'm getting new KYB struts. I am not positive on what all I need to get along with the strut, I know a new bellow but can someone help me with the rest of the list ?  I think also the top mount and bearing. Can I use an OEM one with KYB strut or do I need to buy the KYB ones ? Thanks for the help guys.
