Sync 3 Rearview Camera issue

Greetings, Gentlemen...
I've had my 2019 Fusion Energie for about 18 months now, and I've only added about 10k miles to the odometer thus far... thanks, COVID.

Recently, a minor kerfuffle has arisen concerning the rearview camera; I'll start the car, put it in "Reverse" to exit the garage, and the Sync screen properly shows the view out the rear. Then, to proceed down the street, I'll rotate the gear selector to "Drive," but the Sync screen still shows the view out the rear. A whack on the face near the 8-inch screen doesn't usually help. If I put the car in "Neutral," the rearview screen usually still stays stuck in "reverse view." Putting it in "Park" will usually change the screen back to the proper Audio, Navigation, or whatever Sync view.

At first glance, this would sound like a sticking relay somewhere within the system, but since I know absolutely zilch about the Sync hardware, (and precious little about the rest of it), I don't want to make that call.

Any ideas or comments about this situation?  For whatever it's worth, my Sync is Version 3.4, Build 21098. Maps Version NA 2 20 As of last night, it self reported as "Up To Date"

Check your camera settings.  It sounds like you have it set on 'Delay'  If so, you've described exactly how it's supposed to work.  Have you tried starting to accelerate to see if it reverts to the home screen at a certain speed?  If that's what it's doing, nothing is wrong, and you should stop smacking it.  ?

Rear Camera Delay

Selectable settings for this feature are ON and OFF.

The default setting for the rear camera delay is OFF.

When shifting the transmission out of reverse (R) and into any gear other than park (P), the camera image remains in the display until:

  • Your vehicle speed sufficiently increases.
  • You shift your vehicle into park (P).

Thank you for all your information and suggestions... ?

This afternoon, I fiddled around with the Sync "settings" and noticed that the "Rearview Camera" (or whatever they called it) had two "on-off" slider-type settings, and both were set to the right. (On?) The lower one was something to do with "Delay," so I switched it to the left. (Off?)

Anyway, it seems to perform "properly" now... at least as "the way I'd expect it to work."
When I put the car in "Reverse," I see the rear view on the screen. When I shift out of "Reverse" into any other gear setting, the rear view disappears. Bingo!

That said, I can't imagine why anyone would want to see the rear view in the Sync screen while in any driving situation besides backing up...

Why it was set that way in the first place is the puzzle.... it is off by default.

As far as wanting to see you driving backwards... some do, I have from time to time.... I think the Kenwood I had could do it on the fly (maybe it was the pioneer)

The dealer may have set it that way or somebody was playing with the settings.  May cars have been delivered with several Sync features activated that would normally be off by default from the factory.

I've always kept my delay on.  Based on the number of YouTube videos and devices available to enable workarounds, lots of people want to activate their reverse cameras while going forward.

Like I said, I did a couple times, but I don't see any reason to now... maybe there is one , but I don't see it.   (no pun)

unless you can do it to 'record' to get out of paying the fee for a rear or even front camera to record...  ?

Could you explain what you mean by the second sentence?  What 'fee'?

You can get a decent dash cam for considerably less than that.

I have front and rear "dash" cams and still use the car's Delay setting.

Yea, I see that... I guess when I was last looking they cost that much...

I see they can be about 50-130
