Intermittent wrench and Check engine light 2017 Ford Fusion Energi

Recommended Posts

I have an intermittent wrench/check engine light on my 2017 Ford Fusion Energi. I did a scan using an OBDLINK MX2 and FORScan. This is exactly what what I found. I apologize for all the data I just wanted you all to see everything that I have going on.

I don’t even know where to start? The wrench/check engine light eventually goes away on its own after a few times of turning the car on and off.

I did clear all faults once and everything eventually came back.

Hi demo and welcome to the Ford Fusion Forum. First place to start is to have the 12v battery professionally load tested (not an old fashioned battery test). Today's vehicles are heavily computer/electronic/electrically dependent, and a weak/failing battery can cause all types of electrical gremlins, especially on start-up. If the battery is the original factory battery, replace it. If we get 3-4 years out a a battery in a modern vehicle, we got our money's worth. Although there are always exceptions, it's not like the old days of 7-8 years or more out of a battery.

If it is not the battery, you probably need a good shop/tech to hunt down the issue. Is your 2017 Fusion still within the 5 year/60,000 mile Powertrain Warranty? If yes, the problem may be covered.

Hopefully one of our tech members may also jump in if they can help.

Keep us updated and good luck.

You have a CAN bus issue , the CAN Bus is what the different computers use to communicate with each other

https://www.obd-codes.com/u0104

This need to be professionally diagnosed  By either the dealer of a shop that specializes in Electrical wiring system repairs as this is most likely a wiring issue

Thank you everyone who got back to me. I set up an appointment at a Ford dealership and hopefully they can help me out.

I was thinking the same as you in regards to the 12v battery. It is not the original, but it is probably 3 years old with 50k miles on it.

I tested it with my multimeter, it’s a good one. I got 12.0 volts with the car off and 14.0 volts with it running. Do you think that a couple of decimals low could be causing my problem?

I also took my car to an auto part store and they hooked up their portable machine, not sure exactly what it was. They tested the battery with it still in the car. Their machine told them that it was a good battery. Since it passed do you still think I should try a new battery?

Update for those who are following. I decided to install a new 12v battery despite the fact that my original battery had ok voltage and tested good at the auto part store.

Now it is too early to say for sure, but this may have fixed my problem. When I started my car today it didn’t give me a hard time like it has been over the past week.

Hi demo. Thanks for updating everyone. Hopefully the battery will solve your issues.

Another update:

24 hours with the new 12v battery in all of my faults came back. I took my car into a shop and he asked me if I updated my system to let it know that I installed a new battery. I did not because I didn’t know about this very important step after a 12v battery install.

I guess after a 12v battery install you need to update something in the cars computer letting it know about the install. I am not exactly sure what it is called and I don’t know if you need a special computer to do it. So if someone on here knows how to do it without going to a shop or knows the steps that need to be done after an install, please post it for someone else so they don’t run into the same problems that I did.

After the update to my cars system everything seems to be working as it should. It has only been a couple of days now and I haven’t had any issues, so I can’t stay for sure that my problem is fixed.

I will keep you all posted. Thanks again for everyone’s information.

Hi demo. Yes, there is a reprogramming which needs to occur after a battery replacement. The reprogramming is explained in the Owners Manual, in the section outlining battery replacement. And this information has been posted here many times (but things disappear down the thread list).

The reprogramming can be accomplished in one of three ways:

The first way is if you have the correct programmer, you can do it. But it is safe to assume you do not.

The second way is to leave the vehicle locked and completely untouched for at least 8 hours. That means at least 8 hours, locked and left completely alone. Do not unlock it to get your sunglasses etc. Do not even approach the vehicle with the keyfob in your possession, to avoid it sensing a fob for keyless entry etc. Overnight will do.

The third way is to have a Ford or Lincoln Dealership reprogram the system.

Unfortunately, if all those issues returned, there may be deeper issues than the battery, which may likely require a good shop/tech to diagnose and repair. And since your Fusion is an Energi/hybrid, the shop better be extremely proficient with Hybrids (which not many independent shops are), or else I would highly recommend going to a Ford Dealer.

Let's hope it is only the battery.

Keep us updated and good luck.
