4g Upgrade kit - program 21B09

Has anyone looked into upgrading their 3g wireless tech with the 4g upgrade kit?  Ford will pay for labor but we have to purchase the upgrade kit.  I think my local dealer is taking advantage of us and is asking 650.00 for the kit!  I think this is out of line, but I want to see what others are seeing.  If I need to I will buy from an out of state parts department and have my local dealer install it.  I have a 2019 Fusion Energi Titanium.

Basically after 2/2022 we will lose connectivity to our car from the Myford mobile app.  Most things I can do without, but I do like the fact that it gives me MPGe for each trip I make and lets me see the latest charge state.  I just don't like it 650.00 worth.  I never used it for unlock/remote start etc. so that is not a concern.

thanks!

Hi mdboucher. Strictly from what I have read in various forums, I have seen others quote prices of $350-$400 for the new 4G modem "kit". Pricing is Dealer discretionary, so shop around at your local Ford and Lincoln dealers for the best price. And negotiate. Don't be afraid to tell them you have a price quote of $xxx.xx from another Dealer and ask them to beat it.

Also, get the part number for the kit and see if you can find a better price from an online Ford parts seller. Just be sure the Dealer you will use will accept outside sourced parts. Some Dealers will not warranty work performed with outside supplied parts.

So shop around, negotiate pricing and let us now how you make out. Good luck.

I heard about this "upgrade" a couple of weeks ago... or so. I like using the MyFordMobile app, but I don't like using it enough to fork over several hundos to enable it. My local dealership had never heard about this CSP 21B09... until I asked him about it and gave him the "CSP 2109" identifier. It took him probably 10 or 15 minutes to locate it on his computer, then he told me the story that they'll install the new modem, but I have to buy it... at full retail of nearly $500 (which is what he told me).

It seems kind of fishy that they gave us little or no notice about losing this handy vehicle feature which we paid for when we bought our Fusion Energie's. And if you try to implement "FordPass" on a Fusion Energie, it sends you over to the soon-to-be-obsolete "MyFordMobile."

Ford, if you're reading this, "There's gotta be a better way of doing business." This sucks blue beans.

Hi PonyGuy. Regardless of whether you have this work performed or not, your Dealer is grossly overcharging you for the new 4G modem kit. So keep that in mind in the future. And I would politely let the person you spoke to know you are aware of this, so he hopefully does not try to take advantage of you again, moving forward.

First of all , they do not have to charge you "full retail" for any parts. They determine their parts charges, and the publicly mentioned Dealer cost for that part is ~$240. And most owners are stating their Dealers are quoting prices in the low to mid $300 range for the $G modem upgrade kit. Plus, the Dealer will still make a profit on the installation, for which they'll be paid by Ford.

And on that related note, never accept a first price quote from a Dealer for service work. All prices are negotiable. That advice also goes for independent shops.

Therefore, you may want to keep a close eye on your Ford Dealer and their price gouging, and get competing estimates from your other local Ford and Lincoln Dealers, for any service work you have performed in the future.

Good luck.

  • 2 weeks later...

Stumbled upon this thread a couple of weeks ago because I also had a recall notice mailed to me for 21B09 3G to 4G modem upgrade and wanted to share my experience.

I took my car into my local dealership here in Bentonville, Arkansas on January 5th, 2022 for this recall. I paid $350 + tax for the modem and did not pay for any labor. I took my car in at 7am and they advised 2-4 hours to complete but they also admitted that I was the first person to come in with this recall upgrade at that location so they have no experience with this at all. They had called me and let me know that the install was completed but needed my car over night as it required programming for the new modem which I already had a feeling it was going to need on their side for FordPass to recognize I had the new modem installed. I got the car back the next day January 6th around 1pm. I asked about FordPass and they had no idea how I would go about getting that working and that I'd have to contact their "Sales" department for something like that so I shrugged it off and went home, opened the FordPass app and deleted my car and added it again just so that it could re-initialize and to no avail, did not show an "Activate" button but figured it would take a couple of days so I left it alone.

Fast forward to today January 14th (8 days after I got the car back), I decided to open the FordPass app and the "Activate" button was there so for future reference, it does take at least 4-6 business days for it to recognize the new modem so be patient. I did not call FordPass to open a support ticket and have not called the dealer at all since I got the car back, I just let it be.

Went inside of car, clicked the "Activate" button on my phone app, pop up came up on the car screen (SYNC 3 v3.0.20204) and clicked "Allow" on the screen. After that, everything worked: Lock, Unlock and Start without issue.

Hope this info helps someone.

Just to be clear, if I do not use the app, then the need for this new 4G Modem is not required, correct?  I'll still be able to see the read-outs from my dashboard.  If I don't use the app to start/stop car, etc. as I stated, then no need for upgrade.  Am I understanding this correctly.  And all the previous info above, all good stuff. Thanks for the insights.

Correct, this is only if you use remote features on the app to start and unlock the car, possibly to view journeys and mileage on the app as well. If you don't use the app at all then you are fine. Dashboard gauges and even your remote start on your key fob will continue working regardless of this upgrade.

Hi socal. Your question is a bit unclear. When you say "dashboard", I am assuming you mean the "Dashboard" feature in the LincolnWay phone app, not the dashboard in your car? If you are referring to the LincolnWay app 'Dashboard", then the answer is No

If you do not upgrade to the 4G modem, you will no longer be able to obtain the tire pressures, oil life, miles remaining for fuel, etc. through the "Dashboard" on the LincolnWay app. Those are all obtained through the modem.

Good luck.

I would think that most Ford/Lincolns that are 2019 will have the 4G modem....

check your app, or talk to the dealer (as long as they know what they are doing)

if you really want to , you could spend much less by getting it from a wrecked vehicle...   car-part.com

Dealer in my area quoted just over $300 for part.

Hi Michael. Although that is within the low range I have seen quoted so far, you can also try online Ford parts sellers. Just Google "Online Ford Parts sellers".

The only (possible) drawback to buying online is that the Service Department at some Dealerships may not be willing to warranty the installation of a part they can not verify the source of.

So if you will be having a Ford Dealership install it, check with them first.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

I plan on installing the part myself and taking it in to be programmed by the dealer if needed.  But, upgrading Transceivers-transceiver is what the part is technically called-is low on the to do list.  I usually use fordpartsgiant.com.  Part number DS7Z-14G229-A is priced at $259.71 there.

Same problem here Ford dealer charge 675$ +tx for parts ?my fusion have less  than a year old 20000 km

Hi Tounne. Perhaps you can post back and clear up some confusion.

Your profile states you have a 2010 Fusion. If that is the case, it is ~12 years old and does not have SYNC 3 or a modem of any kind.

On the other hand, if that is a typo and you have a 2020 Fusion, it already has a 4G modem and does not need the modem upgrade at all.

Let us know what the actual story is.

Good luck.

I just change my profil que have update to a 2020 fusion énergie titanium and receive a recall 21b09 that said Ford paid only labor for instal modem ?

Hi Tounne. Okay, you have 2020 Fusion Energie. Yes, for some reason, the 2020 Fusion Energie did not have the 4G modem from the factory. All other 2020 Fusions did. And just as an FYI...it is a CSP (Customer Satisfaction Program), not a recall.

Yes, under the terms of the CSP, Ford will pay for the labor. The vehicle owner must pay for the 4g modem upgrade kit.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

I know things cost more in Canada, but that seems excessive.  The modem is roughly 300USD, give or take.  Based on today's exchange rate, the Canadian dollar is worth .79USD.  That doesn't come anywhere near $800. Perhaps I'm oversimplifying things that I'm not aware of.

Hi Tounne. Parts prices are negotiable. So shop around and negotiate for lower pricing from other Ford and Lincoln Dealers in your area.

One of the things that is being missed, is that this is NOT Ford or Lincoln's issue. They are bending over backwards to assist with the swap.

ATT and Verizon, and all the Telecoms are dropping 3G.  (and some day will drop 4G for 5G when that becomes a standard)

The fact that your vehicle uses a 3G modem is not the fault of the manufacturer!!!  It is what was available at the time (very surprised that the 2020 vehicles do not have 4G modems) me personally I would say that they should pay for you to get a 4G modem.

I would have to disagree with Multitask on this not being a Ford problem. I have a 2020 Ford Fusion Energi manufactured in July 2020. I'm pretty sure that Ford knew that 3G would become obsolete in 2022. They had discontinued using the 3G in most of there vehicles back in 2017. I've had my Energi for only 15 months and only have 11,000 miles on it. My dealer was charging $700 for the 4G upgrade. I found this Ford memo online. If anyone is feeling burned like myself, I think we might have enough for a class action suit.  I found  this article in Motor Trend from March 2018, with this quote from then CEO Jim Hackett. He said "...invest in strategic areas including driver assist technologies, standard 4G LTE by the end of 2019, and over-the-air updates." I'm quite sure they knew.

I just checked that out, and unfortunately that part is no longer available.
