WKelley
I recently bought a very low mileage (88K KM) 2010 FUsion. It's had reasonable maintanence as far as I can tell. Here's what happens: It has done this 3 times and when it was cold. It has started fine many other times when cold. It will start and stall. If I try to start it without rotating the key to off it will just crank. If I fully cycle the key to off then start it will start then stall. Eventually it finally catches and runs. I can hear fuel pump cycling when I cycle the key but I do not hear the pump turn on when I try to restart it without fully cycling the key. I'm thinking fuel pump, just want to cover my bases. Any suggestions would be great. Forgot to add that there are no codes generated or stored in the car. robinsone
Try this, had a similar but not exact problem
WKelley
Out of the blue it happened again today. I cycled the key on and off 3 times before trying to actually start the engine and it started up and drove fine. To me it feels like the pump has lost prime? I checked grounds/wiring and there are no issues anywhere else, I think I'm just going to replace the pump due to age and ease of access. Anything else I am missing?
WKelley
Just to update, actually pulled grounds apart and cleaned them, was crusty underneath but looked OK on top. Haven't had a long crank since the 3rd, will update.
WKelley
About a week after posting it did indeed fail to start again, same symptoms. THen about a week ago I let the level go down under 1/4 and it acted up. SO, today I installed a new Delphi pump assembly, will report back if this is not the fix, but figured it was the best place to start with a 12yr old car.
WKelley
Still no love. Is it normal that the gas pedal readings start at 18% and stop at 88%? Still no codes and if I cycle the key on for OBD Bluetooth scan device to power up it starts. It seems to be getting fuel and acts like there is no spark. It is completely random as to when this happens. EDIT: I just looked more carefully at the TSB for this problem, my car does not have the revised ground strap, ordering that tonight. robinsone
So I know there was a throttle body recall, I had mine replaced for free, but also perhaps swap out the MAF. I had a bad MAF, realizing you have low miles. I also had the ground strap put on and that helped mine, but the strap, TB, and MAF have been things that have caused a start, idle, and die issue on mine.
WKelley
Only open recalls on my car are the driver's airbag and the brake fluid swap. I have scanned the car and streamed the data and all the sensors seemed to be reading what I would expect to see. I have the ground strap coming, part # AE5Z-18801-A, hoping this fixes it once and for all. I will post back after I have the new part installed, should be here in the next few days. EDIT AS OF 8/11/22: I have the new ground strap with capacitor installed, will post back in a month or so or if it acts up sooner. WKelley
It seems like the revised ground strap was the exact thing it needed, car has been rock solid since the 11th of August. Sure wish I had done this before that expensive fuel pump, lol.
RichB
Good that the ground strap fixed the problem. I see that the ground strap can be replaced along with the capacitor assembly (#7L8Z-18801-A). Where are these 2 items ? Are they attached to the battery or maybe the starter ? Thanks for the help. ...Rich B
WKelley
I'm not sure for the part# you gave, my part number is AE5Z-18801-A and it is located at the motor mount on the passenger side of the engine. It attaches to the strut tower from the motor mount. Edited September 28, 2022 by WKelley
RichB
Hi again. It looks like there are 2 related parts, at least according to the attached link https://www.fordpartsgiant.com/parts/ford-capacitor-assy-radio-suppression_7l8z-18801-a.html One is AE5Z-18801-A & the other is 7L8Z-18801-A. I have a 2010 Milan but I'm not seeing anything looking like what is in the pictures from the link. Somewhere else in this forum someone said the strap(s) are under the air intake but that seems to be on the driver's side. I haven't taken off the air intake/air filter housing since I replaced the filter but I'd like to be sure that's where the strap(s) go before tearing things apart. Any chance these are connected to the starter and only accessible from underneath ? I'm not having any troubles now but would like to know where to go under the hood if & when. Thanks again ...Rich B
WKelley
I don't know where that other part could be. My repair was based on the TSB: 09-19-1 Ford Technical Service Bulletin (tsbsearch.com) It is specifically for the ground strap on the passenger side motor mount to strut tower strap. I haven't seen any TSB's for any other ground straps for these cars, wish I could be more helpful.
WKelley
Just to follow this up, replacing that ground strap did nothing but lightening my wallet $40. I posted the fix in another thread but I will post it here too, it was the fuel pump driver which is some sort of relay, I had a shop fix it so I am not quite sure where it is, but that was the part that failed.
robinsone
Try replacing the MAF.
