2ndNewFordGuy
Wasn't sure where to put this so apologies if this ain't it. ABOUT a year ago I came out of my local supermarket and started the car and then discovered the car was stuck in park. Nothing I did from behind the wheel helped. I called a guy, he brought a flat-bed and a rent-a-wreck for me. long story sort, he replaced (he said) "the shifter" itself, (right below the console shift-dial) (I assumed "below" since I could tell by looking at it the part I grab with my hand it wasn't new) and, he said, flashed the computer. about $900 in total. Is it true that simply pulling a battery cable waiting 30 seconds and putting it back on would have cleared this lock? did I get hosed?

Unfortunately, there is no way to accurately diagnose what may have been the issue. The"guy" may have been honest and replaced a defective part to repair your car, or he may have been dishonest. But there is no way to diagnose now whether he was honest or whether disconnecting the battery would have helped. The one blind Internet diagnosis that I would make is that disconnecting the battery is unlikely to have helped, and even if it did, most likely would have been a temporary band-aid anyway. For future information, there is an emergency shift release button that may have helped you. You can find the location and how to use it explained in your Owners Manual. If you do not have your hard copy, you can download the PDF version here: https://www.fleet.ford.com/parts-service/resources/owner-manuals/ Good luck.
2ndNewFordGuy
Thanks man. Your answer is of reasonable comfort. I really just needed to know it wasn't a no-brainer. The mech also said Ford had issued a re-engineered part due to this problem, so it, supposedly then was a potential re-call, but the "frequency #" of Fusions experiencing the problem wasn't high enough, so, no free-fix for me. I definitely have my hard-copy manual. every scrap that came in that glove box is still there. Only the window sticker was relocated. So I will make sure I locate that emrg shift release button. Thanks again
drolds1
If you did get "hosed," it was a year ago, so there's nothing you could do now anyway. A couple of things puzzling me: As bbf2530 points out, there's an emergency shift lock release. Every car has one, since every car has a brake-shift interlock. In your Fusion, the release is inside the center console storage bin and is actuated by inserting a small object, e.g., paper clip, small flat blade screwdriver, or even the metal emergency key from your fob (if you have pushbutton start) into the slot and stepping on the brake pedal. See this video. Next, you stated that the car was placed onto a flat-bed. I see you're in the EU. Did this event happen in the EU or the U.S? I've seen cars in the E.U. picked completely up off the ground using a "sling" and a crane and lowered onto a flat-bed truck. Was that the case? If not, and the car was winched onto a conventional tilt-bed truck, then how did the driver get the shifter into Neutral if it was locked in Park? Or did he drag it onto the truck with the Park lock engaged? If so, not good. Any experienced tow truck driver has dealt with this issue and should know what to do. For example: click. If he replaced the shift range control module under the rotary shifter, no reflash is required. See this video.
