beenard
Hello! This is my first post here so if this is the wrong section feel free to remove, anyways I’ve been car shopping for my girlfriend for a while and found a 2015 Fusion SE with the 1.5L ecoboost, it was a really good deal at only $6600 with 137,000 miles (idk if this is a lot for fusions but her current Jeep has almost 100,000 more than that so it would still be a major upgrade for her), the catch is, it has a tick/knock to the engine. It doesn’t stop with startup and the tick/knock increases when the engine is revved but it goes away completely above 2500-3000 rpm which I thought was odd. I don’t know much about ford engines or engines in general but thought it may be something other than rod knock because of it ceasing at higher rpm’s? It was such a bummer because the car would be really good for her and it has many more features than her current car but the noise was worrying. We drove it on the test drive to a mechanic friend and he said it sounded “like something internal” and advised us to steer clear but he admitted to not working with many Fords. Would there be any likely repair other than an engine replacement, or would a replacement even be worth it? Any advice is welcome, thank you! -also worth noting but not concerned with the engine, the dealer said the transmissions was replaced 3k miles ago so that’s a plus

My opinion: You have a "mechanic friend" who who listened to it, perhaps drove it, and tells you to "steer clear" and that it sounded “like something internal”. On the other hand, no one here has seen, heard or driven the vehicle. And even a sound file or video with sound would not help much. So who do you trust more...your mechanic friend or a bunch of anonymous strangers on the Internet? GDI and TGDI engines can have a relatively loud ticking from the fuel injectors. But it is impossible to tell if that is the issue here. Perhaps pay for a professional used car inspection performed at a shop you trust, and point out to them the specific noises you are hearing? From my perspective, I can't see how the possibility of major engine work or a replacement engine would make this attractive and/or worthwhile. All anyone here can do is take an educated guess, or in some cases, simply a wild guess. Are you willing to take that chance? In the end, you, your girlfriend and your mechanic friend have a better perspective than anyone here, as to what chances you are willing to take. I am sure other members will jump in with their own opinions/advice, so let us know how you make out and good luck.
