Replacing the electric power steering rack with hydraulic power steering - 2011 SEL

Recommended Posts

Anything is possible, but it would take a lot more work than you might think.  Plus steering systems are tuned as a system to match the suspension tuning, so it's not going to feel as good as you think it should.  You might also lose some of the features like stability control.

I would like to know if it is possible to replace the electronic power steering in my 2011 3.0 V6 FUSION with a hydraulic unit from a 2006-2009 fusion.

Hi gigabyte. As Waldo and andyross have stated, yes it is "possible"? Yes, almost anything is possible if we throw enough time, money, sweat and cursing at it.

However, is it realistically possible or worth doing? No.

Here is my opinion/recommendations.  First, get a few other professional diagnoses/estimates. Then according to the overall condition of your current car is in and life situation, decide whether you would rather repair it or get in the market for a new vehicle. But changing over to a hydraulic power steering system is not a realistic option.

Again, just my opinion.

I have personally already considered the cost of the eventual replacing of the electric steering in my car as something inevitably needing to be replaced.  Hoping I have some time, my 2010 only has 92K KM on it so it is very low mile (60K miles or so).

I would expect it to be cheaper to change the electric rack than to try and convert it. Too much missing for a conversion.

There were many changes from Gen 1 to Gen 1.5. Even the V6 was updated with more power (221 to 240 hp). Supposedly only internal changes, but you have no idea if there were any external changes, or redesign of other engine compartment layout. Not to mention pulleys, belts, hoses, etc...
