Morimoto Kit installed - issues

Recommended Posts

I installed the Morimoto Elite H11 low beam 5k system with the relay harness.  When I turn them on, they fire fine - WITH THE CAR OFF.  If I start the car, the fire quick and then turn off.  Sometimes I can get one side to stay on, but not always.  What's going on?

Hi Shumax. In addition to being illegal for on-road use (even the websites for these companies state so, but that is another story...lol), the usual issue is these aftermarket kits are not compatible with the electronics in vehicles which did not come with that bulb system from the factory. A workaround which seems to sometimes be successful for some owners, is to install a resistor in the line. But another member with that experience would need to jump on to tell you what type and where.

Just my personal opinion here, for what it is worth: Having seen too many instances of these aftermarket systems frying the electronics/electrical systems of our vehicles or simply causing never ending headaches, I would recommend removing the aftermarket system, and reinstalling the factory spec bulbs.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do, let us know how you make out and good luck.

In the end, I believe the DTR function is messing with the relay and ballast.  It pulses a signal to the DTR's and I think it is underloading the signal to the ballast and creating issues.  I have never run into this before and have installed 6 of these kits before.  Be that as it may, I'm not willing to mess with it.  I went out and bought some Sylvania H11 Powersport LED's.  They had good reviews and installed easily.  They put out a very nice crisp white light and have a sharp cutoff.  Not as good as a true HID OEM light, but far superior to the Halogen lights that Ford gave me...

To make the HIDS work with a relay harness you have to drop a CANBUS load resistor in line with the headlamp trigger wire for the relay.

Basically without it the BCM doesn't see enough draw and shuts down power to the low beam.

The high beams are not monitored at all by the BCM.
