Softer Ride

Recommended Posts

Hi All I have owned a 2012 Fusion SE for the past 8 years have always liked the ride comfort and have been satisfied with the handling.

I recently purchased a 2015 Fusion Hybrid, Titanium trim with 47,000 miles on it from my daughter. So, i know the history of the car.

I find the ride very harsh when compared to my 2012. The handling is definitely superior but the ride comfort is not. Same size wheels. Same size tires.

The car was just inspected at my local ford dealer and the suspension was all fine.

I know the 2012 had coil springs and shocks on the front and the 2015 has struts.

i have looked all over the internet for a softer set of struts but i can’t find any. I can find performance struts and lowering struts but not struts for a softer ride. I would gladly give up some handling for a softer ride.

I thought about the Lincoln MKZ struts but those are electronically  controlled and the fusions are passive. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Hi Jpaulus. It will be very difficult to find softer struts. If the struts and suspension are all okay (as per your Ford Dealer), then the next step would be tires. Tires can have a major impact on ride quality and harshness. Especially if they are old and/or worn.

So first...Have you checked the tire pressures to be sure they are all set to the Ford recommended pressure listed on the Manufacturers door placard located on the drivers side door sill? Do not depend on the TPMS system for maintaining proper tire pressures.

Next...How many miles are on the current tires? If they are the Factory/OEM tires, they are due for a change.

Also, when your Fusion is due for new tires, research and purchase tires which are rated highly for ride comfort, road noise etc., as opposed to handling. Tires can make an appreciable difference.

I would recommenced using the Tire Decision Guide on The Tire Rack website. https://www.tirerack.com/content/tirerack/desktop/en/homepage.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqo_5-JDP_AIVB8zICh2cuwO5EAAYASAAEgJNvfD_BwE&ef_id=EAIaIQobChMIqo_5-JDP_AIVB8zICh2cuwO5EAAYASAAEgJNvfD_BwE:G:s&s_kwcid=AL!3756!3!347759874397!e!!g!!tire rack'&gclsrc=aw.ds

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Thanks for the response. Tire pressure is accurate.

I have used the Tire Rack guide in the past and will do so again when i replace these tires.

Probably sometime this summer

Hi Jpaulus. Just to play it safe: What psi do you have the tires set to? And did you check the tire pressures, all four tires, with a quality tire pressure gauge, or are you relying on the TPMS readout?

Good luck.

35 psi all 4 tires.

JACO  elite pro tire pressure gauge.

Hi Jpaulus. Good. In fact, I have the same pressure gauge. ?

Try a ride oriented tire when your tires come due for replacement.

Keep us updated and good luck.

Jpaulus.  First thing to check is rim or tire size.   If it has 18" or bigger, get them of the thing. I'm going through the same thing with my 09 SE. These big rims look really cool and make the car handshake slightly   better but that's where it stops. They don't have enough sidewall height to absorb bumps. So they pick up slightest imperfections in the road. A large enough pothole can blow them out too.  I have 18" on mine and im going back to 16".  I thought about 17" but i want to switch once and hopefully have it done with. You can see my post under wheels and tires, Name of Bop

Hi Bop, thanks for the reply. I have the same size wheels on both the 2012 and the 2015.  17".

The 2012 rides great the 2015, not so much. When i need new tires i will switch to a softer riding tire.

The gen 2 Fusions switched from shocks and springs on the front to Struts. Perhaps that explains it.
