Darryl D AR
I was riding down the road and a message on the dashboard popped up telling me that my engine too hot . When I looked under the hood the coolant tank was empty. Titanium 2.0L AWD 2017
andyross
Two basic answers. You have a leak that drips out of the engine, and possibly onto the ground. Or a head gasket issue and it's sucking it in and burning it. After topping it up, you need to examine the engine, and the ground, for any leaks. The other one is harder to diagnose and will probably need a mechanic to check out.

If so, hopefully you have a warranty of some kind.
sacojim
This happened to my 2016 Fusion. Stopped the engine and checked under the hood and no coolant in the over flow tank. Restarted the engine and no warning message and the temperature gauge returned to normal. Drove to my mechanic and when he looked under the hood the overflow tank was at normal level. About a month later after normal use, the engine refused to start. Well after 4 months in the Ford dealership and trying everything, they couldn’t get it going. I got rid of the car and now have a Subaru Legacy. No more Fords!
