Tire Pressure Sensor Fault

Over the past year, every time I turn on my car, on the dash it says "tire pressure sensor fault". I finally have decided to do something about it! Did a little bit of research and saw that the problem is likely dead batteries in the sensors inside my tires. (If there could be any other reasons this error is showing please let me know). So before I go and spend $100 on a set of 4 from amazon, does anyone recommend some that are good to use? Also, how exactly would I go about Re-training them for them to work properly after installed? Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Hi wmbeckham. My recommendation would be this: You will need to dismount the tires from the wheels in order to replace the sensors anyway. Therefore, instead of trying to save a few dollars purchasing sensors on your own, find a tire shop you trust and have them supply, replace and retrain them. Do you belong to Costco or another warehouse club that installs tires? If yes, that would be a good place to go.

Also...if you will need to be replacing your tires soon anyway, wait until then, replace the TPMS sensors when you replace the tires, and save a good chunk of money.

 

Concerning whether there could be another issue besides TPMS batteries? Yes, it is possible. However, if the sensors on your Fusion are the factory originals, then as you surmised, the batteries are long overdue for replacement.

Went to firestone a few weeks ago and they quoted me nearly $600 to replace the sensors which is insane! I should try around and see what other places would charge. I wouldn't spend more than $200 on this to be honest which is why I may try to do it myself. But yeah I'll ask around and see what I can find! Thanks for the reply!

Hi wmbeckham. The tires need to be removed from the wheels in order to replace the TPMS sensors. Most people I know, including myself, do not have the tools necessary for that. Do you have the tools and ability to dismount all 4 tires from the wheels and remount them yourself?

 

If not, you will need to have this work performed by a shop. This was why I also mentioned it may make sense just to wait until you need to replace your tires, if it will not be too long from now. In that way, the sensors can simply be replaced as part of the work when they install the new tires and saving you quite a bit of money. After all, you have been living with the TPMS warning light for a year now anyway.
