Wacky Temp

Had to drive 2009 Ford Fusion through 2 mile of mud. Pushed it hard. Next time I drove it on highway shook really bad, which I think is probably just the mud, but temperature gauge is wacky, running normal one second, then extreme right, then bottoming out. Engine (or maybe just fans, I don't know enough, running faster than normal, which I know by the sound. It didn't used to sound that fast. Turned it around and came home and not driven since, as still too muddy to get to highway.  Could smell "burning" from back end near tire or exhaust pipe. Engine light came on once, but off again. Have used it to charge truck battery twice. Is it likely transmission, or possibly less serious?

Mud can cause a lot of damage, it will rip out wires, damage hoses and do all sorts of other bad things to a car.  Clean it really well, I mean get any visible mud off the undercarriage and then reassess.  It's not hard to damage any car this way.
