dyoct & sports-car-list. props on the great walk through. i was discouraged when i read the WSM and finally got eyes on the hoses attaching the the tstat. cant even see the tstat. i was getting discouraged. thinking even if i take of the ps-pump will i be able to access... etc. considering returning the $60 part to the dealer and paying them to do it.

i now have a 2nd wind, and im going to go get-er-done.

thanks again. great walk through.

as for location, perhaps there is a benefit of the location. a more accurate reading, which allows them to better control the coolant, leading to better performance or fuel economy. perhaps they think this is a more robust location for durability. perhaps they couldnt fit it in a better place. we may all agree its difficult to change, but we cant play monday morning quarterback. now go hug an engineer and tell him/her you appreciate him.

Hey thanks. And wow on the responses here and I'll have to admit, I did *over-react* to the initial job but when the Ford manual isn't detailed enough, you are majorly let down. MAJOR PROPS to Sports-car-list for the photos! I would recommend, however, staying with the OEM hose clamps. ngirardi, it's been several years, but are the WSM instructions just the two pages of basic instructions? Who knows why it ended being in that spot, but at least there is a way to work to it, I dread the day I have to do this on my Escape since according to the previous owner, he never touched it nor did anything beyond "changing the oil and tires."

Hi All,

Joined this forum specifically because of this problem. Can anyone advise on the part number for the thermostat housing assembly? Including gasket, plastic housing, and thermostat itself? I saw RT-1193 but not sure if that's just the thermostat or the entire assembly?

TIA

just go to AutoZone or orielly's its about $27 and includes the seal, you cant just buy the thermostat its in the housing. Power steering pump bolts are 10 mm, thermostat housing bolts are 8mm. I would recomend 1/4 inch drive ratchet with various length extensions as its a tight fit in there, a swivel would be a good idea also, as there is not enough space to go straight in on some of the bolts. harbor freight has some wobble extensions that let the socket swivel a little bit, those work great.

Just wanted to bump the thread and thank dycot. This saved me a ton of trouble.

I also wanted to add, someone somewhere said that he wished he had unbolted the thermostat housing before trying to wrestle the hoses off. I tried this, but ended up having to bolt it back on. Getting the housing off doesn't give you much extra room to work with and couldn't make any progress. I had to bolt it back on so I could use the housing for leverage with a pry bar.

Will a bad thermostat cause a whining sound as soon as you start up? My 07 started making this sound last month and I noticed my engine temp gauge needle would remain at the 10 O'Clock position and never move. Thanks in advance for any assistance folks.

Nope, not a whining sound. When you say it stays at 10 o'clock, does it jump there immediately or that's where it ends up after a few minutes?

Need to know which engine you have, but I would say to check or just replace the drive belt and make sure the coolant is topped up. If the noise and overheating continue I would suspect the water pump. If the noise goes away but overheating persists then it could be the thermostat - but those are designed to fail wide open, not closed.

OK - so a reply to an old thread but is something I'm dealing with now. Going to do the thermostat change this weekend.  in preparing for what I'm up against, I can easily access the belt tensioner for belt removal and the top two bolts for the power steering pump.  What is the easiest way to access the bottom bolt of the power steering pump?
