2010 Fusion "sloshing" sound when first driven

Recommended Posts

This has been one the the 2010s gremlins. I bought mine in June of 2009 and it did it from the very start. The issue with mine stopped about a year ago and has not returned. Sounds like it's up under the dash somewhere....doesn't it?

I just read the TSB on this. It's says 2.5 motors. I have a 3.0 and had the problem.

Maybe a little late to this game. My Fusion started this last winter but was barely noticeable. This winter, it started again but seems to go away after a couple blocks. I've done the whole purge thing and that hasn't done much. Right now it's not so bad, like some of the others here (crossing fingers). My car is one of the earlier 2010s (we bought in August of 2009) and it is the 3.0 V6. It has 66K miles (yes, we drive a lot!), and the gurgling sound was never present until last winter when the car had about 48K on it. So.....it appears this usually occurs in cars with the I4 engines and early on. But I've seen a couple posts from people with V6's and my car has 66K.

Anyway, that's my history and was wondering if anyone has found and answer?

Thanks

Update: About a year ago, the dealer finally agreed to install the TSB for the sloshing noise. It was particularly bad in my 2012 2.5L since day one. The TSB was installed last summer and I've now experienced cold (very cold!) weather since. I'm happy to report that the TSB bottle replacement was very successful. Once in a while, I'll hear a faint sloshing noise right after start up, but it's rare and extremely short when it does occur.

Hopefully the TSB was worth the wear and tear on the car. It was done under warranty.

Now if I could just have all the exterior lights stop flashing everytime you open a door and close a door, that would be great. I really don't need that and I'm getting tired of replacing light bulbs.

It's been cokld here in DC, and my 2010 is making the noise once in a while. It's a total non-issue at this point, and it doesn't have any effect on the car, no problems whatsoever.

Our's still makes that noise and we endured the early futile efforts of our local service dept. to fix the issue. This was before the new parts were available and we decided to just let it go until there was some other reason to take it back for this issue. We now have 35K on the car and it still sounds like a "white water theme park" for a few seconds on colder mornings. Really not a big deal for us anymore.

2012 3.0. I hear it loud and clear on cold starts, especially if the car is sitting in my driveway when started (steep slope). When I back out, put it in drive and acclerate, it sounds like a long empty pipe suddenly being rushed with water. It stops by the time I get to the end of the street and I don't hear it again until the next cold stop. Not sure it hurts anything, but it's unnerving to hear.

Well, since I started this topic over 4 years ago, I should probably give an update. We've logged 83K on the car (77K on the replacement engine) and have yet to have the slosh return. This winter with it's sub-zero temps in central Indiana was a good test. I have noticed that the coolant level in the degas tank is about 1/2" above the "full" line. I haven't opend the cap to that since Ford replaced the engine. The level has remained the same.

I guess it's a hit and miss kinda thing. I haven't heard of the new generation Fusion having this issue. Something had to have changed if it's no longer an issue. Oh well... I need to get my 68 Fastback off the rotisserie and on the road again.

FYI, bought a 2012 Fusion Sport new back in June 2012. Last Wednesday it started making the water noise and the outside temp here in Nashville is 90+ today. But on this car the noise subsides shortly after reaching operating temp.

Absolutely a TERRIBLE surprise that the repair is almost $500...Ford Customer Service a terrible joke and worse than Comcast. Was not allowed to talk to a supervisor. I am also a fleet buyer...guess what...no Fords for the next fifteen years for our company. If enough of us complain to NHTSA we COULD force a recall. We will never buy Ford crap again.

Welcome to the forum, topgunn_99; I want to see what I can do to turn this situation around. How many miles are on your Fusion? I'll start researching options to assist.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but my 2012 Fusion SE 2.5L (bought brand new in Aug. 2012) just started doing this about two weeks ago. I just hit 50k miles, and had never, ever had this happen until now. Before finding this forum, I did some Google searching and initially found my coolant reservoir, which I've never touched (but I do get my oil changed at a Big O, not sure if they ever add to it), was only about half full. I added some 50/50 coolant to get it to the max line, hoping that it would resolve this issue, but it instead made it worse. I assumed that when I added coolant it caused "more air" to get in the radiator, so I have attempted three times to bleed the system by taking off the reservoir cap and using the bleeder valve, but it was no help. I'm not paying $500+ for this fix that should be a recall and should have been fixed well before the 2012 model came out. I guess I'll be jamming a bit louder now, and get used to the "toilet flushing" when I first start up on cold mornings.

There shouldn't be any loss of coolant, as the coolant system is a sealed system. If you see a loss of coolant, they you should have it checked out to find the source of the leak. Adding more coolant without first finding the source of the leak is not a good practice. Also, you should only add the same coolant specified in the owner's manual.

If the coolant level is kept at the cold fill line, the sloshing noise should go away over time as it self burps air into the reservoir.

After coolant draining, the proper way to refill these is by using a vacuum fill aparatus. The filling with vent valve open method will not remove all the air and result in sloshing sound until the air is burped into the reservoir. This self burping could take several hundred miles and require a few toppings of the reservoir.

Does anyone happen to know what is typically the source of leaks in these situations? I've been keeping an eye on my reservoir and it does seem that I'm losing a very, very small amount of coolant every day. Probably less than 1 cm between morning checks (when the engine has sat overnight). I am guessing that wherever I'm leaking coolant is what is causing air to get into my system.

One thing I found to be strange was that I did not drive my car this past Saturday, and on Sunday I was barely able to hear the slushing, and also did not notice a drop in my coolant level. It seems that I'm only leaking during or after driving. I have noticed a few times that I get a small puddle underneath my car after being parked for a few hours, but it's hard to tell if it's coolant or water from running the defroster.

When the engine warms up to normal operating temperature, the coolant system becomes under pressure. That's why you should only remove the reservoir cap when the engine is cold to avoid spraying coolant.

A small leak will usually not leak until the engine is warmed up and the coolant system becomes pressurized.

I doubt that you're getting condensation from running your defroster this time of the year, even where you live. It should be fairly easy to tell the difference between water and coolant. Put something (non-porous) under the car to catch the liquid. Coolant will have a scent and will feel a little slippery. If you collect enough, you might even be able to see what color it is. Water will be, well, watery.

Looks like it's definitely coolant leaking. I could barely see it when I got home drip a couple of times. It's right in the middle of the car, between the front two wheels. I can't spot the leak from looking under the hood, so it must be behind or underneath the engine somewhere. Any ideas?
