A lot of rust Any Advice on what to do?

Just curious if all this rust is normal on a 2008 ford fusion. And what should I do about this.

I see that many have looked at this but none have replied. I do not have an 08 Fusion but would venture a guess that what you have is very uncommon. I have seen some posts on this or other Fusion forums in which owners have noted a lack of paint and some rust on the seat structures. Have you owned this car since new? Do you know it's history? The pictures that you posted are what I would expect to see in a vehicle that had spent some time under water or in an area near the coast with heavy salt concentration in the air. I have no first hand knowledge of this type of damage but have seen vehicles in coastal areas that have exhibited similar amounts of rust. I have no idea of what you could do to mitigate the damage.

Hi bjay. :D Do you live in a winter area with ice/snow and salted roads? Did you purchase new or used? If used, was it a "Salvage Title".

 

According to where you live, the rust underneath the car is not completely out of the ordinary.

 

What should you do about it? Take it to the Dealer and ask for a diagnosis.

That car has seen some heavy winters, snow and salt will make the underside of the car look just like that. The interior parts you show are normally unpainted, and if the car is damp inside, those parts can get a layer of rust on them. Snow brought in on shoes usually has some salt in it too, so when it melts and vaporizes from the heater, the moisture collects on the cold metal, and it will cause it to rust.

 

Totally normal for a northern climate car that has seen snow, especially if it is ungaraged.

Exceedingly normal...

 

 

I got it new and I live in the dc area and also i noticed that when the air is on the floor gets damp maybe that could be the cause. Also I've been to about 4 different dealers and they all say it's just surface rust.

 

Does anyone have any problems like this especially with all the rust under the seats

Sounds like the drip tube is clogged for the AC. That explains the rust inside. I have only been to DC in September, but they do get snow IIRC, don't know if they use salt though, but the bottom of the car looks like a car does here in IL after a couple winters.

I don't believe the interior rust issue is normal. I had a 1988 Nissan Sentra with a very bad trunk leak. I paid over and over again to have it fixed. It was like a fish tank in the trunk. The car was a POS and every time I braked water came rolling in to the back seat area from the trunk. The car was damp, misty and smelled wet. BUT, there was LITTLE rust as a result. When lifted you could see ice forming in the winter on the underside of the car from water coming through, it was wild, but little rust. The AC evaporator often got clogged as well and leaves were stuck in the duct work and water entered the car through the front as well. Again, little if no rust.

 

This was on a $9,000 POS car.

 

All a manufacturer needs to do is paint the exposed metal parts with that black rust resistant paint at the factory and there would be less rust. This is cost cutting with not unsurprising results.

Telling you guys, it is normal. You'll find this with GM as well in certain areas of their vehicles: seat pan, dash support strut behind glove box. It is a very thin layer of surface rust.

 

Wipe it down with GM SuperLube or whatever Ford equivalent.

If it makes you feel any better, I have the same thing on a Toyota Tacoma. The underside has a fine coating of rust. I live in the midwest and have all weather mats that tend to let snow and water pool on them. The heat evaporates it when I turn it on. On some mornings, I get a slight fogging of the windows inside until the cab warms up. I'm sure that's something like you're experiencing. It really doesn't hurt anything as the metal is so thick and its exposure to corrosive environments is limited. It's what I call an "out of sight cost savings".

I will have to say this, that the rust I am seeing here appears to be completely normal. I sold my 2006 Chevy Trailblazer SS when I bought my hybrid, and that SUV had even more rust than that. Stuff like this is made even more normal if you see a lot of road salt, and don't wash and flush the underbody frequently during the winter. My 2005 Focus also has a good deal of corrosion underneath as well, as that vehicle has seen some pretty good winter action over the years.

I have a 2012 SEL. Last week I dropped a pen in front of the driver's seat, and when I looked under the seat to find it, I noticed that there was one part of the seat structure that was completely covered with surface rust. If you look at your post number 1 in this thread, take a look at thumbnail picture number 6. That is exactly what mine looks like. That metal tube about 1/2 inch in diameter that runs left to right is completely rusted over. The supports on the left and right sides are OK, but it is just that one tube that is rusty. The same situation exists under the passenger's seat as well. I don't think it's a safety concern, because, at least at this point, it hasn't affected the structure. Of course, that could change over time. All the other structural pieces under both seats seem to be pretty rust free so far. I just noticed the problem last week, so I haven't had time to do anything about it. I'll have the dealer take a look at it the next time I go in for an oil change, probably in the next six weeks or so. The interesting thing is that all the components underneath the car, which you would expect to have a coating of surface rust on them, seem to be nice and clean, and these are the ones that have been exposed to all the road salt and other chemicals. I don't have any idea why only this one metal tube under the seats should be so rusty.
