Who_b_Galt?
This problem started in October when the weather started getting cold. The noise is getting progressively worse (louder) as temperature drops, and lasts until the engine is almost at operating temperature. (slowly getting quieter as the engine warms.) I suppose this could be a bad belt, but Im wondering if a pulley is out of alignment or bad bearings. The belt doesn't appear to have excessive cracking and looks to be in good condition overall. Any ideas?
waterrunner09
I've also had this issue pop up on cold starts where the car had been sitting for more then about 4 hours on my 07 fusion with the 2.3L once september came. It sounded like a very high piched chirp that wasn't constant, and didn't do it every time I started it up, but it was not the typical belt squealing sound. Once engine was at operating temp the chirp would be gone. I took it into the dealer figuring it was a belt tensioner going bad (sound was coming from the back of the engine where the tensioner is located), but they "claimed" they could not duplicate the sound, but that all the pulleys were in alignment and the belt tensioner was good. I took it to another dealer for a second opinion and they said the noise was from the serp belt. I ended up replacing the belt myself, which didn't appear to be glazed or cracked. Once I replaced the belt, the sound went away for about a month, then came back again, but once again it dosen't do it everytime I start it up in the morning. Anyone have any ideas? I'm stumped as the new belt was quiet for only a month, but now it's making the same chirp sound again. I would think if it was an alignment or pulley bearing issue, the belt would not have made a difference for a month, but I'm not sure? [ If anyone is still on this thread, my '08 Milan (sister to your Fusion!) makes what I believe to be a similar noise when I start it up and put it in gear. FtLewis2002
It could be a lot of things. High humidity putting condensation on the belt, a severely discharged battery making the alternator go to full output (which makes it really hard to spin) when you start it, a bad belt, loose tensioner, dirt on the belt, (seen that a few times) and so on. I had a vehicle that would squeal like a pig after I went through the car wash until I'd take a paint brush and run it along the splines cleaning them off. Used to drive me batshit crazy.
xmech2k
When's the last time the belt was changed? I've always changed the belt's on my cars once a year, need it or not. Don't want to be stranded for something so simple. And keep the old one with the tools in your trunk just in case.

Yes and No. I get that loud squeal you get when you first start up your car, but then the squealing/chirping you get when its running is not the same as mine. Mine has a lot higher pitched chirp, and it will chirp a few times, then stop for a few seconds, then chirp again; there's no set repetition to the chirping.

Do you know what is wrong?
jakoliss
this is a common issue with 2.3L 06, 07 modle year. there is a TSB that states a replacment of belt and tensionor. I had it done for mine and it fixed the problem with the squeling.
Venegas22
My car used to squel during hot weather when it stood still for a good 8 hours in the sun. Got a belt tensinor and it took care of the problem i have 88,000 miles on it and the belt still is in good condition!
TripleW
I had the same problem on my '06 and getting the belt tensioner replaced does indeed fix the issue.
