JeffWS
Hello, Be kind, this is my first post. I am looking to trade my Focus ZX4 ST in on a Blue Sport. I have been offered a good deal, and the car drives great. It reminds me of my SHO, alittle. What octane number is recommended by Ford for the Sport, and what actual fuel mileage can I receive? Thanks, Jeff
bbf2530
Hello, Be kind, this is my first post. I am looking to trade my Focus ZX4 ST in on a Blue Sport. I have been offered a good deal, and the car drives great. It reminds me of my SHO, alittle. What octane number is recommended by Ford for the Sport, and what actual fuel mileage can I receive? Thanks, Jeff Hi Jeff. :D Welcome and congratulations! Regular 87 octane fuel is recommended. In fact, Ford specifically advises not to use premium, as it can cause problems. Actual fuel mileage? As a baseline, you can count on what the EPA numbers are, then factor in your particular driving circumstances. As much as some people complain about the EPA numbers, the EPA numbers are accurate for an "apples to apples" comparison of different cars. They are scientifically controlled tests. Much more accurate than 100 strangers on the Internet telling you their particular mileage figures, with no information as to how they drive (heavy foot/light foot), where they drive (all highway/all city/mixed/what kind of mix) etc.. Add to that the fact of your "city driving" may be much more or much less stop and go than what someone else considers to be "city driving". And realizing that most people who are lousy drivers do not realize it or will not admit it anyway, and there are just too many variables to take into account. That is why the EPA ratings are actually the most accurate states to go by. Of course, this is just my opinion/advice, so everyone is free to ignore it if they wish. Politely, of course Just for the fun of it, I can tell you that my MKZ, (same 3.5L powertrain as the Fusion Sport) gets just under 23MPG, mixed driving. I drive with a medium to light foot, only accelerating hard when I need to. Hope this information helps. Good luck. :beerchug: Edited April 24, 2010 by bbf2530

JeffWS
Well...that is good news. I like the idea that you may use 87 octane. I can live with low 20's for the city and high 20's on the highway. Now all I need to do is pull the trigger on this deal. Jeff

Jeff Hi Jeff. :D While I certainly do not doubt that royroddey gets the mpg's he states in his particular circumstances, mileage that high for the 3.5L engine would certainly not be the norm in what is considered true city/highway driving. For true city/highway driving, you should expect just about what the EPA ratings are: 18 City/27 Highway for the FWD version, and 17 City/24 Hwy for the AWD version. True city driving (constant low speed stop-and- go) will be in the high teens, 18 mpg or so. If it is cold where you are in the winter, even down to 17 mpg. Again, I mean no offense to royroddy and believe his figures for his particular situation, it just is certainly not what the average driver will get in regular city/highway driving. So unless you drive exactly as he does, in the exact same type of driving environment, the EPA ratings are a more accurate predictor. I just do not want you to be highly disappointed when your mpg's don't match expectations. Hope this information helps Good luck. :beerchug:

TX 2010 Ford Fusion Sport
Here is my actual fuel mileage since I bought my 2010 Fusion Sport. I typically drive about 40 highway miles per day.
toyz
Here in Phoenix our "city driving" is nothing like NYC or Chicago. Here our city driving is 45mph interupted by a stoplight every mile or two. In this type of driving, my Sport averages about 23mpg. On my commute to Las Vegas or Los Angeles (done every two- three weeks), I average around 28mpg. This is at highway speeds of 75-80 mph. On my trips to Las Vegas, I am mostly on two lane roads where my average speed is about 65mph with fairly frequent bursts higher when passing. I find it surprising that both trips average around 28mpg. The car must be considerably less efficient at 75-80mph than at 65mph for the mileage to be the same considering the "wide-open" passing required on the trips to Las Vegas. I am verry pleased with this mileage on regular gas but wonder what the highway mileage would be at a steady 65mph.

I've seen nothing close to that over an entire tank of fuel. Next week I'll be driving my Fusion Sport on a long trip, and hope to see improved mpg, perhaps as high as 28 mpg!
toyz
My first recommendation is to check your tire pressure. It makes a world of difference in gas mileage with the lower profile tires of the Sport.

omelet1978
I think the MPG's is one of the Fusion's weaknesses b/c I'm getting about 20.5 regular driving and about 21.5 with lots of highway. The Fusion Sport is a heavier car, so I think Ford should work some of their magic on this. However, it requires 87 which makes up for this quite a bit. I had an Altima where it said "premium recommended" and it is a pain in the ass b/c you put premium in and feel bad b/c you're gas bill goes up like $30 a month or you put regular in and wonder if you are somehow damaging the engine...
pcsgrp35se
With 17k miles on my sport I can vouch that general nj metro driving is giving me 23.4mpg. For a normal tank fill I drive about 100 miles of highway (60-70mph) and the balance is the 1 mile drive to the train station and back, going shopping and general local driving. I usually do a 14-15 gal fill every two weeks. On the highway I have no problem getting 29-30mpg even with the a/c on in the summer (I had my car last april). There doesn't seem to be any major difference between winter and summer numbers (I use winter tires and expected slightly lower numbers). I keep the tires inflated, use synthetic oil and run 87 gas. I really don't stomp on the gas much but when I do, you know your sucking fuel. Driving in a spirited fashon drops the mpg's down very fast. After all, 3.5 worth of space has to be filled with fuel. As someone said in a prior post, not having to pay for premium is like getting 4-5mpg over what my 3.5 altima got. I just wish the trip computer would provide instant mpgs as well as the avg number Edited April 28, 2010 by pcsgrp35se
JeffWS
Well...the trigger was pulled, and I brought my Blue Sport home today. The car has the 401 A package and I paid invoice minus the incentives. The car really drives nice and I hope the car feels as good down the road. The sirius radio and the sync are great features. Thanks for all the information. Jeff

Jeff Honestly, I was hoping for like 1mpg more than what I'm getting (20.5-22mpg) BUT truth be told there are more important things. It's a nice sporty car that is reliable...Had a used BMW before this and that thing broke like every month. Enjoy the new ride. I've got the blue color too, and I think that color really makes the car stand out. I've received a lot of compliments on it.
TX 2010 Ford Fusion Sport
Today, I got the best fuel mileage since buying my 2010 Fusion Sport on December 31, 2009 - 24.3 mpg. Total miles driven..........: 363.4 miles with about 50 miles of that non-highway Gallons on refill.............: 14.95 gallons My tire pressure is correct. The A/C was running the entire trip as it is hot here in Texas. The average MPG on the car display was much higher. At one point, I reset it while driving on the interstate. When I reached my destination about 150 miles later, the car display showed 29.2 mpg. I am still hoping for better overall mileage on my 2010 Fusion Sport. My overall average so far is 21.6 mpg

drolds1
I believe it calls for 91 octane as it has 267 hp. The question has already been answered correctly by bbf2530. There's absolutely no reason to guess. The owners guide clearly states 87 and further recommends against the use of premium (91 octane) fuel: Your vehicle is designed to use“Regular” unleaded gasoline with a pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87. If you are experiencing starting, rough idle or hesitation driveability problems during a cold start, try a different brand of “Regular” unleaded gasoline. Premium unleaded gasoline is not recommended for vehicles designed to use “Regular” unleaded gasoline because it may cause these problems to become more pronounced. For the record, it's 263hp. But what does the hp rating of the 3.5 have to do with octane requirement? The upgraded 2011 3.5 with 285 hp still uses regular fuel.
UnmaskedGremlin
I've been tracking my mileage every 1000 miles thus far, and I'm just under 7000 miles in my car. The best 1000 mile range was 18.6 mpg, the worst was 17.6.
pcsgrp35se
Well, just did a 1200 mile trip, 28.9 mpg with my sport with the a/c going and driving at 70-75mph except for about 45 minutes of bumper to bumper traffic in Indiana and PA.
_7803
The question has already been answered correctly by bbf2530. There's absolutely no reason to guess. The owners guide clearly states 87 and further recommends against the use of premium (91 octane) fuel: I'm going to disagree on this, this engine I believe has about 10.5:1 compression and all of the cars I have seen recommend an octane of 89. The manual says you might encounter some knock, but this is normal?????? HUH????? I've tried both in mine and have noticed a modest performance increase with 89 octane. I'm sticking with 89 in mine!!!!!!!
onthewood
I'll take that 285 HP upgrade thank you very much!! I wonder if that's just a ROM flash?Or maybe a little cam advance/retard tweaking as well as a reflash?
