AWD - MPG ! What are you guys getting ?

Hello all, I just bought a 2008 AWD fusion a couple months ago and I think my MPG is a little low, the computer is telling me 21.5 per gallon. I thought these things were good for at least 25 MPG and I do alot of highway miles. What are you guys getting? Thanks

With a 2010 Sport AWD I was seeing around 24mpg (after resetting the computer) on the highway on a long road trip (17 hour!) with cruise control set to about 75-80mph... loaded with 3 adults and a full trunk. To see noticeable highway mpg I'd say you need to be on cruise control for an extended period. For freeway driving to work it seems like my mileage is the same as city, even though it's most of the distance. [edited to fix the numbers because my L/100km to mpg conversion was wrong- ya, I'm in Canada)

 

My normal commute/daily use avg is about 20mpg. Depending on mood, I vary between 'grandma' driving and dynamic action sequences.

im getting about 24 in mixed driving,but i think that will improve after breakin period.

looking forward to driving it in the snow,i hear its a tank.

 

**update**

took a short cruise on the freeway today(100 mi.)filled it up with gas on a off ramp,reset the mileage computer,i was amazed to see 28-29 miles per gallon.

70-75 mph, no traffic

My 2010 SEL AWD w/7900 miles on it averages around 21mpg in mixed suburban driving. On the highway, I'm getting around 26mpg. Haven't done a long totally highway trip yet - hard to do in the NYC area.

Ive only had the vehicle for a month and my wife drives it 5 min to work and back every day and we use it on weekends. We have seen about 24 mpg and i was pretty surprised with that seeing as she has such a short drive to and from work.

The highest I've gotten has been 23.3-ish, and that was on a trip to Columbus from Pittsburgh (200 miles)

 

I usually average about 22.5 to/from work, a 55 mile mostly highway commute.

I have 2010 fusionsport awd and during the winter months I average around 22.5-23.0 mpg's and during warmer months I can average about 25-27 mpg's. I mostly drive on the highways with minimal city driving.

I have a 2007, Fusion AWD 3.0. no mods. and I get 26-27 highway, after computer reset, no traffic, around 75 mph. Combined city/highway runs around 21mpg.

Have a 2010 SEL AWD that shows an indicated average of a consistent 23.5. I have never checked the computer for accuracy. I can fill the tank and keep the cruise control on fifty miles per for a sixty miles round trip with patches of 40 then 35 then 25 mph zones and believe it or not, have seen 42 mpg on the computer. That was with real easy driving. The same trip at sixty mph and a little rough house takes me back to 23.5 to 24.00. I use the suggested regular (87?) and the only time I can tell if the engine is running is when sticking my foot in it. I dearly love the sound of the V6 when going full bore...reminds me of the old flatheads I drove back in the forties, fifties and early sixties. Must mention that the AWD makes the SEL into a different rig. The extra gears and stuff lower the center of gravity plus adds some weight and the cornering is really great!

I am getting 24.3 mpg combined milage for around town and highway. really quite surprising for a 3.0 V6. I don't just use the computer. I do the math.

I have a 07 AWD switched the front and rear diff and trans to all amsoil synthetics and it made a huge difference in my oppinion. Without I was getting 20 to 22 around town and 28 29 highway. Now im getting 24 to 25 city and 30 to 31 highway. Last summer without it from Ohio to N Carolina with myself and a friend both weighing 200+ and both our girlfriends a/c blowing and trunk full of luggage was getting 26.

I went to Ford and they said well there are no check engine lights on dash so there is nothing they can do. They want me to record the next time i put gas in the tank and how many kms it gets me, it pisses me off I told them it costs me $70 a week in gas and that gets me 186 miles.

1ofakindgt's numbers ( not the 'Amsoil' #s) can easily be achieved in the summer with the 2007 AWD 16" wheel/tire setup.

 

To get 14 US MPG ( ~17 L/100 km !) , you must be driving on very hilly terrains ( or idling a lot along with short drives in freezing temperatures).

 

Try have the engine warmed up to normal operating temperature and while driving on a relatively flat expressway, reset the mileage reading. Continue to drive for 5-10 km and you should get 8.5 L/100km (27 US MPG) easily.

according to the computer, I'm only getting 15mpgs in my 2011 Sport AWD w/18k miles. But it is winter now (cold plus winter blend gas), its hilly here, and my commute is all city/local driving and only 4 miles one way.

 

I just bought the car a few weeks ago. I checked the lifetime mpg average by going into the engineering test mode (hold reset button when turning on key), and it said 20.5mpgs. The last owner must have driven alot more highway miles.

 

prior to this, I had two F150 4x4 crew cabs with 5.4 V8 and got 12mpgs in winter and 13mpgs summer, same city driving conditions.

The Fusions have AWD, not 4WD. The above is referring to the case of the typical truck that has selectable 2WD/4WD (I'm not sure who would leave their truck in 4WD on the highway since it will stress the drivetrain). However it was true that they had to test AWD vehicles with only one axle in the past (by disconnecting the drive shafts), but the decrease in driveline losses was compensated for in the calculations (so the fuel economy ratings are still accurate). Now they have a dual roller dyno so they can test AWD vehicles properly (not sure if they tested the Fusion AWD on it or not). The AWD system would be mostly FWD during the EPA test cycles anyway.

Even if the AWD Fusion was tested by the EPA, were they using dual roller dyno then?

 

The original Fusion AWD program (2007/8) was tuned for traction and handling mainly by the use of torque vectoring. The 'stop and go' test cycles ( especially the cold temperature test) is what really should hurt the earlier AWD Fusions' fuel economy.

 

The AWD Fusions actually did really well in actual driving conditions.

I do mind about the fuel economy but I am also willing to pay a few hundred dollars more for gas per year simply for the better driving performances.

I am averaging about 20 MPG with mine, a 2012 SEL AWD. Past few months in the cold I am getting 16-18 MPG. Best tank ever was 26.5 MPG on a road trip to Iowa last summer.

I am averaging about 17.5 mpg. Best ever was 21.5. 2010 Sport AWD 3.5L, 94 Premium Unleaded. Put about 1,300 gallons of fuel in the car last year!!! (about 22,000 miles or $6,600 CAD)
