gelven
Hey all! I purchased a 2010 Ford Fusion Sport 3.5L in late July. I'm curious as to what type of oil I should use for the first car's oil change, so that it is comparable to the factory oil. I may just have this belief because I want everything, within my power, to go right for my first car. Should I use a certain type (synthetic, blend, conventional) for the first? I realize the differences between the two. My brother mentioned to me that I should post on a forum or call around dealers to ask which one is best suited. I bought the car out-of-state and don't have a free factory oil change. I am at 4,100 miles. I believe the owner's manual states that I should change it at 5k. Is there anything special I should do? Thanks Mark
jazztrumpet216
Not really... I would just head out to the auto parts store, pick up a 5 qt container of Motorcraft synthetic blend, and a Motorcraft filter. You can go for higher end if you wish, but for 5k changes, that will suffice since that's what is on your car now.
2010SEL
Mobil One and a good Wix filter. You'll probably spend less than for the Ford/Motorcraft stuff and the quality is the same or better.
Grey
Motorcraft 5w20 and Motorcraft oil filter at WallMart - or look for a coupon ($14.95 to $19.95) from your Ford dealership. Atlanta dealers will take another Ford dealer's coupons. Synthetic blend Motorcraft is all you need and represents the best value.
akirby
Ditto on the Motorcraft. You don't have to "call around" for advice. Pull out the owner's manual and it tells you very specifically what type of oil and filter to use.
bbf2530
Hey all! I purchased a 2010 Ford Fusion Sport 3.5L in late July. Thanks Mark Hi Mark. :D To add to the good information that everyone else has already provided: The actual "Normal Service" oil change interval for your Fusion is 6 months/7,500 miles (whichever comes first). The "Severe Service" oil change interval is 6 months/5,000 miles. The description of what constitutes "Severe Service" is in the Maintenance Schedule Guide which you were given when you purchased your vehicle. As the names imply, most peoples driving environment qualifies as "Normal Service", but check the descriptions to see which you fall under. Concerning what oil to use: Your Fusion comes from the factory filled with Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend. It is a synthetic blend or "semi-synthetic" oil. To fully protect your Warranty rights, you must use a 5W-20 oil which meets the Ford specifications listed in the Owners Manual. It does not have to be the Motorcraft brand, but it does need to be a 5W-20 that meets the Ford Specifications. Just look in the Index under "Engine Oil". If you wish to go full synthetic, you can. If you wish to use a conventional oil that meets the Ford specifications, you can. As long as the oil states on the container that it "meets or exceed" the Ford Specification listed in the Maintenance Chart, you are fine. And as also mentioned above, you can usually find the answers to most questions in the Owners Manual. Of course, it never hurts to ask here, but when in doubt (or in a hurry), you will find the answers more quickly in the Manual. Additionally, if you like, you can download PDF versions of your Owners Manual, Maintenance Schedule Guide, Warranty Guide etc.,, here: LINK :Ford Owner Guides. Simply input your vehicle information into the drop-downs and click "submit". Then click on the guide you would like to save and save it to your computer. It comes in very handy. I find myself using the PDF versions more than the hard copy in my glove box. Good luck with your new Fusion Sport. :beerchug: :beerchug: Edited October 24, 2010 by bbf2530

gelven
Thanks, everybody. All of this information is extremely helpful... especially BBF's! I think I shall go with some sort of durablend that's located in the owner's manual once I hit 5k miles. Thanks!
hickory
I have a 2011 SELwith the 2.5 4 cyl engine with 800 miles on it now. I asked the shop manager about changing the oil to full synthetic and he told me to do it on the 4th oil change if I wanted to. I have one free oil change coming from the dealership and I will probably have it done at about 1500 miles. After that I will be changing the oil myself and contributing the oil to my friend's oil heater that he uses to heat his 60' by 90' garage. I will be using Napa Gold filters after the first change. Way back in 1965 I bought a '57 Ford for $220 , went to a Shell station and bought their best oil and filter. Found out later that that old Ford consumed about 2 quarts per evening running around town and hammering it a bit. No smoke out the tailpipe but it threw out the oil from the main seals. I then purchased "recombined" oil in the glass bottles that were in most gas stations at that time. 18 cents a quart and clear as a bell in the bottles. Gasoline was about 24 cents per gallon. Drove that '57 for about a year or so until I got T-boned one day. Miss that old Ford and the fun I had with it. Hope that it is out there somewhere. I am driving a 2003 Z-71 right now and I really like it. Next truck will be a Ford! Like that Ford did not take the gvment buy out.! Really love my Fusion!
