Strange WhirringType Noise

I have a 2007 Ford Fusion 3.0 AWD with about 68k miles. Two weeks ago began a strange whirring type noise. Noise only happens upon acceleration and the noise gets louder the faster you go and gets quieter as you slow down. It is hard to describe the noise. I was thinking possibly a wheel bearing but noise sounds like coming from center of vehicle???? Rotated tires and no change. Noise is not present when car is at idle, only when accelerating or deaccelerating. went to Ford and was told it was Transmission and Transfer case but they werenot certain. Trying to get some ideas here?? any ideas from all you fellow Fusion owners?? any help would be greatly appreciated. Noise is getting worse since two weeks ago

thanks

Hi

I have a 2008 fusion with the AWD and the 3.0. It also seems to have developed a whirring noise. My noise started at about

50K miles. I thought it was the tires. But now I have 65K on it and new tires but the noise did not go away, It starts when you

get rolling and then the noise speeds up like its related to how fast you are going. Changing gears on the Auto or

even shutting off the engine while moving does not eliminate the noise or change the sound in any way. .

I now assume its some sort of noise in the AWD or drive shafts and may be normal as other people

have reported a similar sound. Some of these people have AWD Mercedes or BMW's too! You can't hear the noise once you get above

40 or so as road noise drowns it out. There is no vibration so it it can't be too serious.

We just had a similar noise, and a bearing in the alternator was shot, AND an idler pulley bearing was bad. This was on my wife's 11 Escape (3.0l v6). The noise was particularly bad around 40-50 when you took your foot off the gas and the engine was dragging rather than pulling. The engine has 30K on it, so this was fixed under warranty - the issue has not returned. One other note - it seemed related to the A/C as it was gone with the AC off MOST of the time. In the end it was not related to it at all.

My 2008 Fusion AWD now has about 77K miles on it. The whirring noise from the driveshaft center support bearing (looks to be the cause) is getting a little louder but bearable. I think I'll wait until 100K miles before taking it in to Ford to get the thing fixed. It probably will start making noise again after another 50k miles!
