Excessive vibrations while in gear

I have a 2009 Ford Fusion SE 4 cyl and beginning around 200 miles it has had excessive vibrations while in gear but you are stopped at a stop sign or red light. It is now at 33,000 miles and has been in the shop 10 plus times. This last time we took it to the dealership the techs were told by master tech to try the motor mount. They tried messing with it and it would stop for a little and then start right back. Then the local techs were told to replace the motor mount. They replaced it and now the vibrations are 10 times worse than before they replaced the it. I have asked several people I know who have a fusion with the same engine and none of them have ever experienced the vibrations. Ford does not know what is going on. The local dealership has put in a request for a field engineer to come test drive the car to see if they can locate the problem, but I am trying to do research myself so when he/she does come they can not give me any hassle. Has anyone ever heard of this problem? Your response is greatly appreciated.

I have a 2008 and have the same problem, I believe resulting from a flywheel or torque converter issue. Had it into the dealer 6 x and no better. I'm still working on it. Sometimes I feel sick from the vibrations! Keep on them, I had a field engineer look at mine and it didn't fix the problem. Every other Fusion I get in doesn't shake at all while at a red light in gear!!

Thanks for your response. I had someone on another fusion forum tell me it could be a misassembled engine, a bent torque converter, or a weight was messed up on the fly wheel. I called the dealership the other day to see if during one of the many times it was in the shop they checked those options and they stated no because it was too much of a hassle to check because they would have to take the engine apart. The engineer should be here Thursday so hopefully I can get an answer.

Please let me know what the engineer finds. I'll bet money its flywheel or torque converter. My car runs great and I only get the vibration at idle in gear. My car never had issues until they tore into the flywheel. Now I'm screwed. So basically, your car runs great and vibrates with your foot on the brake in gear, correrct.

Just to let everyone know who has been reading this post, Ford motor company did not do anything for me or my car. The field engineer came and stated everything was within specs. She stated that she had also driven cars that had worse vibrations than mine. I think this is a little ridiculous that they know there is a problem with excessive vibrations but will not do anything about it.

Hey yall!

I have 2008 Ford Fusion 2.3L 50k miles it does same thing.

I had a torque app on my phone and bluetooth OBD II. I hooked up the car.

Found out the emission wasn't completed during running. I think it has something do with EGR valve, or i dont know. I recommended that you get your cars checked by diagnosis computer programmer that plugs up to read details of ECU functions.

Hope this helps!

Daniel

My 2010 Fusion SE I4 has been vibrating when in gear but stopped with my foot on the brake since I bought it in the fall of 2010. It is an April 2009 build. I just had it out to the dealer, and they told me they could not find any fault, but they flashed the PCM just in case. The vibration is still there. I am wondering if I am now stuck with this for the life of the car.

I also wonder if this has anything to do with my poor gas milage - 22 mpg (imperial gallons) with a combination city and country driving, or 35 mpg straight highway driving at 110 klm / hr. The car has a clean air cleaner, and tire pressures are kept up. For those of you with this vibration, is your gas milage below par?

Update: my car was in for the third time today with this problem. The first time (as stated above) they flashed the transmission. The problem persisted. Two weeks ago it was in again, and this time a motor mount was realigned and tightened, plus some gravel cleaned out. When I picked the car up the vibration was still there. Today the car was in for four new tires (just 31,000 miles) and they again looked at the vibration problem. A call was put into Ford's hotline by the dealership looking for help, and hopefully we will get an acceptable answer next week. I will let you know!

Update: Ford's help line got back to the dealership with some things to try. I took my car in today for them to look at, and when I got the car back they told me to bring it in next week to have the right motor mount replaced. Since the old motor mount was re aligned last time and the vibration persisted, I have my doubts that this is the problem. But it is worth a try, as the car is still under warranty. I will let you know what happens next week.

BTW, with just 31000 miles the rear brakes are also going to be replaced, and they are NOT covered under my warranty.

Well, my Fusion SE I4 went in today, and had the right motor mount replaced. The vibration is still there.

I think I know what the next solution from Ford will be: Deny that it is a problem. People I have spoken to say that after the motor mounts are ruled out, an "expert" will tell me that the vibration is "within spec". Does anyone know if there is, in fact, a measurable specification saying how much vibration is acceptable?

I will not gve up.

Bump.

Hey All,

I just bought a used 2012 Fusion SE (16000 miles) and have noticed the same thing you are describing. It's not excessive, but it is noticeable. If I shift to neutral while waiting at a stop light, the vibrations all but disappear.

Is this the same problem you saw? Did you ever find a resolution?

Hi Jason. Yes, this sounds like the problem I am experiencing. There has been no resolution, and Ford now says it is within spec, and will not work on it further. It is probably something out of balance in the drivetrain. Now I will just have to live with it. Never have I had a car that did this, and with our modern cars it is normal? I am stuck with it until I can afford another car.

At least my transmission is ok!

same problem here . i have an 07 mercury milan 4cy. changed the accessory drive belt , idler pulley , and belt tensioner all at 60k. vibrations disappear in neutral , dealer says there's nothing wrong with it. filed a complaint with FOMOCO . They told me they were going to give me an extended warranty free of charge for 36 more k after i reached my 60k mark. when it came time , ford told me they cant provide the free warranty because its against the law . i call bull shit . my point here is that there is no way to fix this problem , i went to 3 different stealerships , no engine mount. pulley. obdll scanner , drive belt , or torque converter can fix it. this car has been nothing but problems since day one . i am honestly believe that FORD does stand for Fix Or Repair Daily. im going to put the car up for sale next week , so if any one is interested throw me an offer . its the premier package 63k , all paper work from the dealer available . thanks guys !!

yeah they told me they were going to mail me the paper work and stuff, all bull shit, i am never buying another FoMoCo vehicle as long as i live, but hey has no one got this problem solved? really ?

I would blame your dealer, not necessarily Ford. Time to switch to a different dealer.

As for your bad gas mileage, I think it correlates well with your interests—"vroooooooooooooooooooooom". If you get rid of a few o's you might get better mileage.

Gone to 3 different dealers ,

Not really going anywhere fast any time soon in a fusion, be it a sport. I think you should correlate information with your interest.
