Ford=crap?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I recently test drove a fusion and really liked it. I had been considering a camry. While I was growing up, I was always told Toyota and Honda are the way to go. I've read several reviews of the fusion and they all seem very positive.

I was talking to my dad today, and told him I was considering the fusion. He was adamant that Ford cars are crap. He told me if I chose the Ford over the Toyota I would regret it. I would like to know, from you fusion owners, is the quality as good as Toyota? Any problems? Please help put my doubts to rest. Thank you.

Ford has come along way from what they were. I grew up in a Ford family and have owned a 97 Ranger, 93 Explorer and my 2010 Fusion..they were all awesome, and never gave me any problems. The 2010-2011 Fusions beat every other car in its class for initial quality, that includes the Camry. They are very nice cars, and I personally would never buy a Camry over the Fusion... I think the Fusion looks much nicer, and has better features. When i was looking to buy my car i was looking at a 2010 Nissan Altima and the 2010 Fusion, i bought the Fusion because it offered a lot more for the price. I also owned a 95 Nissan Maxima, and loved that car... Nissan and Subaru is the only other brand i consider purchasing. It really is only your decision but i would get the Fusion.. haha.

Does your dad know that Toyotas have safety problems including being unable to STOP!!? (Yes a broad generalization and not completely accurate but the same idea as calling a company 'crap' based on perceptions from 20 years ago... and there were some documented quality issues then.)

Personally I don't even care about Toyota quality. It's that the cars look boring :)

My dad drove Fords back in the fifties and sixties. Then he went to European makes. I drove Hondas myself for thirty-five years. They were the car to beat. I test drove the 2010 Mazda 6, Nissan Maxima, Honda Accord, and Hyundai Sonata, and I am thrilled with my 2010 SEL. You won't regret getting a Fusion.

My brother traded in his 2004 Camry for a 2008 Mercury Milan Premier (Basically the Fusion SEL with different looks). He loved his Camry but it doesn't hold a candle to the Fusion in his eyes. I know the Fusion is 4 years newer but the Fusion has more power (both cars were/are 4 cylinders), is better finished, looks better. Our entire family has driven Toyota or Honda since 1990.

It also matters what your job is. If you work with clients very frequently what you drive MATTERS. I can elaborate if you would like.

If you are the kind of person who wants more from a car than to get from point A to point B, don't buy the Camry. While it has one of the quietest and smoothest rides in the segment, it is the automotive equivalent to driving a toaster. There is NO excitement in the drive whatsoever. It is an appliance.

My Fusion has not been bad for me, quality wise. I have 20k miles on a 2010 Fusion which I took delivery of a year ago last week. Had to have the transmission reprogrammed twice (once under the 10B15 campaign, then another when I experienced some rough shift qualities at about 15k). Has been fine ever since, and have had nothing else to report.

Would your dad believe some objective data rather than just opinions? Both Consumer Reports and the J.D. Power survey have ranked the Fusion ahead of either the Toyota Camry or the Honda Accord for initial quality as well as long-term reliability.

Here's one story that ran on this awhile back:

Report: Ford Fusion Tops Honda Accord, Toyota Camry in Consumer Reports Reliability Ranking

YONKERS, NY Oct 27, 2009 – Ford has secured its position as the only Detroit automaker with world-class reliability. About 90 percent (46 of 51) of Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln products were found to have average or better reliability, according to Consumer Reports’ 2009 Annual Car Reliability Survey. The results were announced today at an Automotive Press Association luncheon in Detroit.

Ford’s sustained production of vehicles that are as dependable-or better than-some of the industry’s best dispels the notion that only Japanese manufacturers make reliable cars. Other than the Toyota Prius, the reliability of the 4-cylinder Fusion and Milan ranks higher than that of any other family sedan. Both of those Ford Motor Company products continue to beat the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, while the upscale Lincoln MKZ tops its rivals, the Acura TL and Lexus ES.

“It’s rare for Consumer Reports to see family sedans from domestic carmakers continue to beat the reliability scores of such highly regarded Japanese models as the Camry and Accord,” said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports’ Automotive Test Center. The last domestic sedan that had better reliability than the Camry and Accord was the Buick Regal in 2004, he noted.

Ford’s position as the most reliable domestic carmaker includes good scores for its new Ford Flex SUV. But the Lincoln Division has had mixed results; some models score below their Ford equivalents. All-wheel-drive versions of the Lincoln MKS, MKX, and MKZ, essentially high-end versions of the Ford Taurus, Edge, and Fusion, respectively, are all below average.

Despite all the reliability rankings, NHTSB reports/recalls, media reviews, etc, comparing one company to another or flat-out calling one 'crap' will always be very subjective. It depends a lot on the surroundings where you grew up (family influence). With two exceptions, I grew up in a Ford family, and continue to drive Ford products. Even if you have a number of problems with a model (or two), if you're familiar with the brand, you're more likely to "forgive" the problems. Some may also call it blind loyalty. Have all our Ford's been perfect? No. However, I trust the Ford products than I will other brands. Someone more familiar with GM products will probably say the same thing about GMs, and so on.

Regardless on the brand, a car will only be as reliable as the way it's maintained. If someone believes there is a bulletproof car out there, I have a bridge and some swamp land to sell them. I traded my previous car in with over 100K on it. The only problem was a burned-out dash light. Had I not wanted something with a bit more room and a little more power (as well as a few more creature comforts), I would have gladly hung onto that car much longer. But I was also very religious on maintaining the car as well.

Bottom-line, buy what you feel most comfortable with and what you'll enjoy most. Unless someone else is contributing to your payments, your opinion should be the only one that matters in the end. Enjoy whatever you decide to buy, but like others have already said, I don't think you'll be disappointed if you do go with the Fusion.

Congrats, you definitely will not regret buying the Fusion. I still love my 07, not a problem with it yet, nothing! While it's true that quality of domestic vehicles went downhill in the 80's, in the mid 90's quality started to improve. Nowadays Ford has been very impressive with their vehicles. Enjoy your new Fusion, and let your dad take it for a spin, maybe you can change his impression of American cars.

i'm a fusion owner that is employed by toyota!! i see you made your choice a good one :)

from my experience if you buy a camry expect the following. 2.4L oil consumption, water pump failure, crap tires that are bald in 15k. rear stabilizer bushings wear quickly misc. trimwork (splash shields fog covers hubcaps) all come off very easily.

i chose this car over a camry and i could have got a good deal being an employee. but the fusion handles better and has stood up better (i've put nothing into her but a wheel bearing in 105k)

good luck with your new SEL!!

Congratulations.

I also have a 2011 SEL on order, did a lot of reading beforedeciding and concluded that the only review that matters is yours only.

While test driving a demo, did not notice any quirks with the electric steering( as edmunds notes), while the climate control buttons may be an annoyance for a bit , I was quite impressed with the fusion, the 2.5 4cyl is quite impressive and no high rpm noise as edmunds quotes also.

Now just have to wait until about June for my vehicle to arrive.

Wanted to update you guys. I've had my Fusion for a week now and love it! I immediately went out and got Meguiars products and have detailed it. I feel very confident in my choice now. Even my dad had to admit it was a great car when he finally saw it. The only annoyance I've had so far is SYNC wanting to randomly disconnect from my Droid X. Still learning all the gadgets. Awesome car; couldn't be happier!

Myself and my parents have been driving GM products for who knows how many years. I was hesitant to get the Fusion, but so far I love my SE. The previous car was a '99 Z24, so this is a big noticeable improvement. When my '04 Grand AM was in for repairs, I was given an '06 SE with the 2.3L for a rental. The 2nd Gen Fusions are so much better in ride comfort and fuel economy.

I also looked at the Toyota Camry before buying my Fusion, but I didn't the fusion because it is made in America, because it is not. It is made in Mexico. Ironically the Camry is made in America. The truth be told, the Camry with the Japanese name is more American product than the Fusion with the American name is.

I dont know if I agree with that. The Toyota HQ is still is Asia. That's where the profits go... Not America. So does that mean it's American still? I bet the only reason it's built in America is because it is more cost effective than building it in Japan and shipping it to America
