Ordered a 2011, Getting a 2012- What to Expect?

Recommended Posts

Hello, folks!

I helped my daughter order her first new vehicle (she's paying for it herself!). On April 04 we placed an order for a 2011 SE "just so"- exactly as she wanted it. A couple days ago the dealership called to say that it "might be a 2012 depending on how the parts lines run". I started researching and found the thread here about the plant closing on Apr. 04, so it looks like it will DEFINITELY be a 2012. Now she's upset, not knowing what she will be getting.

I have had no luck finding any information on the 2012s, even on Ford's website. Can anyone point me to pictures of KNOWN 2012 models? Looks like there would be something out there if Ford is no longer offering the 2011s.

Thanks for the help!

Regan

I doubt there will be any major changes in the last model year before a totally new Fusion hits the market. Why is your daughter upset? She's getting a 1 model year newer car than she expected. One year less depreciation and there might even be some minor improvements

Thanks for the reply, Drolds1,

If you look up "2012 Ford Fusion Pictures" or some such on the web, some of those cars they show are substantially different, especially around the headlights and grille. I told her it looked like those were just concept pictures, maybe for later models, but I guess right now nobody knows? She "wants what she wants" (not sure WHERE she got that from), and some of those cars represented as 2012s are, to her, just plain UGLY.

I would have thought the dealership would have known it would be a 2012, with the plant shutting down the same day we ordered...

Those are old pictures speculating about the next generation Fusion due sometime next year (calendar year 2012, not model year).

The only changes for 2012 Fusion will be minor - one or two paint color changes, etc. If you ordered a 2011 then you're under no obligation to keep the 2012 if for some reason she doesn't like it - so there is ZERO risk and chances are the 2012 will be slightly better. Win/win. If you don't like it, walk away.

I just found the 2012 order guide. These are the ONLY changes:

2 colors added - Kona Blue, Ginger Ale

SE now has the automatic transmission standard (manual appears to no longer be available on the SE

So unless she ordered a manual transmission SE it should be identical.

And also 8 way power 1st row seats available, with drivers seat power recline.

The exterior will look exactly the same.

Uh-oh- yes, it was supposed to be a manual. I guess that's good news/ bad news, but we'll see what happens I guess. Maybe they'll make that one exception!

Where could I look at the order guide?

Thanks for the reassurance, I appreciate it!

The dealer can always do a dealer search to find a 2011 in stock somewhere.

Thanks, Akirby!

The dealer did a search, but manual SEs with the color combination she wants, with Sync, sunroof, and spoiler, are hard to come by! Like I said, this is her first new car ever, and she's very excited about getting just what she wants.

I sure appreciate y'all's help!

Has she looked at the new Focus? I think the SE is available with a manual.

If they're deleting the manual from the SE, that would leave it only on the "S" (which has basically no options available) - would they even bother keeping it available just for the one basic trim? Or is the S changing to auto-only too?

Hi Moosehead. :D The manual transmission is still standard equipment on the 2012 Fusion S.

Good luck. :beerchug:

"Has she looked at the new Focus? I think the SE is available with a manual."

We started out looking at the Focus and the Mazda3, but they were just a little too small to be comfortable. She's likely to keep this car for years, and she's thinking down the road to car seats, etc.

Looks like if Ford accepted the order on the 4th when it was transmitted, and they didn't reject it then, that maybe they will build this one as a manual? We'll see... Thanks for all the help- I truly appreciate it!

  • 3 weeks later...

I ordered a 2011 Fusion Hybrid on March 4, 2011. Today, I checked on the Build Date and was told it was June 13, 2011. Do you know whether that will be a 2011 or a 2012?

Also, I ordered it in Light Ice Blue Metallic, which isn't in the 2012 Order Guide, so what's likely to happen with that?

Keep in mind there is a European "Ford Fusion" which is different from the Fusion sold in the Americas.

They like having a car they can advertise for "$19,999" (or whatever). Not having an automatic gives them C$1200 to take off the price. In Canada at least the differences between S and SE boiled down to 16" aluminum vs 17" steel, power driver seat and floor mats. An SE cost $3000 more. However many promotions are availible for the SE but are for the S. The promotions change depending on the month (financing, cash back, "free" something) but for me it was cheaper to buy an SE than an S :headspin:

I found it impossible to even find a dealer with a manual in any trim level so I could test drive it. It's hard to consider any of these cars stripped down.

Then I see some comparisons (pro-Ford) saying it's great the Fusion is availible with a sporty manual, others say a con of the Fusion is it doesn't come standard with an Automatic :headspin: of course they don't compare vehicles equipped the same, just the standard options for a trim.
