Do you need to reprogram TPMS

While switching back to summer tyres from winters the milage was right for rotating them, so I did. When I asked the dealer to re-program the sensors on my following oil change the SM said Ford's TPMS does not care for the position of the sensors as long as they are on the car. Is this true?

True. You don't need to reprogram for tire rotations. I'm assuming you didn't program in the winter tires then and just drove with the light on all winter.

My winter tires do not have the TPMS in them either. I park in front of my garage that has the summer tires in it and most of the winter the car sensed the tires in the garage and the tire icon light and message stayed off. Maybe a half dozen times over the winter they came on while out on the road but after parking in front of the garage overnight the message and tire icon light turned off again. Not too bad. Beats spending over 200 bucks for the sensors in the winter tires. And the icon when it did come on was not all that annoying. It would blink on off for awhile before it went steady on. The message could just be turned off with the reset switch.

I have OEM TPMS sensors in both sets of winter and summer wheels. The car senses them no problem when changing over.

No it doesn't. You may be "fooling" it by having the original tires near by when your winter tires are on, but if you ever actually have a flat or air leak, the system won't give you any warming unless the sensors are trained to the vehicle.

The only way the system can automatically learn new sensors without the training method is by changing tires one at a time and giving the system time to learn the new sensor before the next one is put on.

As I mention here:

I had to train the sensors when I went All seasons to Winters, but did not train when I went from Winters back to All seasons. I don't park near my other set of tires, and have driven 300+km away (it takes 60km from the last sensor reading for it to throw an alarm). Unless there's something very odd and specific with how I'm changing them in my driveway that I don't know about that was different between the two swaps.

Almost ditto for me. I have no need to retrain them either way and I do not park near my other set of wheels. And I have driven 100's of km away from them with no warning light.

just changed over to my summer 225/45-18's and had the dealer program them at no charge (took 1 minute). he cycled the key 3 or 4 times and then flashed each wheel (followed by a honk) separately with remote. must be a way to do it yourself as the dealer will not longer be as generous after i stop using them when the warranty ends. he also mentioned that the time it takes for the warning light to come on varies as i drove mine for a week before i took it in but assured me that it definitely would come on eventually.

You can buy your own Ford TPMS reset tool. Here's one on ebay.

Alright guys, one more quick question, don't want to thread hijack. My wife has a 2010 fusion with the 17" steelies and hubcaps. We bought 2011 alloy 17's from a newer fusion today on our local craigslist and got a steal. My question is can we just have the tires swapped over and the car will learn the sensors on the new wheels? OR should we have the sensors from the old wheels swtiched to the new wheels? This is my first post here and I did try searching but havent gotten a difinitive answer. Thanks for the help.

Hi Zach. :D Just to add a bit to FD's information - The sensors are the same so they do not need to be swapped. This will save you time and money. However, although some members here claim they have not needed to, the sensors on the new wheels will need to be programmed/trained to your cars TPMS system.

Good luck. :beerchug:
