Can I Use the Hitch Listed for 2010 Model on My 07 Fusion?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm pretty new to this forum, nice to know you guys!

I'm planning to move from Winnipeg to Kingston in this summer. According to my plan, the inside of my 07 fusion will be filled up with my stuff for school, clothes, etc. I will put my winter tires, bicycle, and my snowboard on a trailer borrowed from my friend. So now I'm facing a problem on choosing the suitable hitch for my 07 fusion. I looked through etrailer.com and found that the hitch listed for my 07 model (24775) is different than what for 10 model (60282). I'm really confused, don't all fusions share the same chassis and main frame? I climbed under my car and realized that it has the exactly the same screw holes at exactly the same locations for 2010 model (see figure 1 for the screw holes on each side). I also checked the bumpers on the the two models, in terms of size they are not very different. I can't think of any trouble from the exhaust either.

The reason why I hesitate to directly go with 24775 is that it requires drilling holes on the car frame. I think drilling through a metal frame of a car is going to be quite tough. Plus I don't even have a power drill handy. Therefore I much prefer 60282 or the similar, which don't require any drilling.

So my question is, has anybody tried to install 2010 model's hitch on any 06-09 model? Is it possible? Thank you so much!

Frames change from model to model. The 2010 models brought a pretty significant overhaul and the frame certainly isn't the same. Hitch manufacturers test and design their hitches on the vehicles to ensure a safe product and they try to make it as easy to install as possible. Some vehicles make it easier. I would strongly encourage not to try to fit a hitch built for a 2010 Fusion on your 2007. It wouldn't be safe you, your vehicle or others on the road.

Above all, thank you so much for replying me! Personally, I don't think there was any significant overhaul towards fusion chassis (the old Mazda 6 chassis) for all fusion models. They even have the same door panels. For even some online stores such as autoanything, they listed a hitch from Curt that does not require drilling. So now I'm even more confused.

The basic design/structure of the frame may have remained the same, but the front and rear fascias have changed, and the underlying bumper structures could have changed as well. We don't always know why the auto manufacturers make the changes that they do, but we keep a sharp watch on the fitguides that hitch manufacturers maintain. I double checked Curt's just now and for 06-09 it's # 11329 and for 10-11 it's #11390. Ford changed something and the hitch manufacturers decided to change the design for whatever reason. The Curt Hitch Guide was last updated 5/24/11, here's a link: http://www.curtmfg.com/index.cfm?event=pageview&contentpieceid=7343

The 11390 is the only hitch I'm aware of that Curt offers for the 10-11 Fusions. With the Curt, you're not drilling new holes, just enlarging existing.

Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch offer no-drill models for the 10-11 Fusions. Draw-Tite is part # 24865 and Hidden Hitch is part # 60282.

Here's instruction links if you want to look through them.

I just installed a hitch for a 2011 fusion on my 2006 and it fit just fine. The rear frame is the same and there is enough room to clear the bumper. Personally I think the 2011 hitch is a much better design and much more solid because it bolts to the frame which is plenty strong. I only use it for towing my dirt bike which weighs 225 lbs.
