I am having a problem with my car, from time to time my car fails to start. Once I turn the key the engine continues to turn over but fails to start. I have had this problem approximately 15 times. I took my car to the warranty service but they looked at me like I was crazy because they never heard of the problem before. Can someone please tell me the TSB number for this issue? You know how you hear things turn on and start when you turn the key without out turning it all the way to start normally called "accessory". It turns on all sorts of things, one being the fuel pump, if you turn it too quick it doesnt have enough time to start the fuel pump so you get the car just trying to turn over because no gas is hitting the engine. I give it an extra second before I turn it sometimes. I am having a problem with my car, from time to time my car fails to start. I have attempted to look it up with no luck. Sorry, there is no such thing as "starting your car too fast." In fact, this car has has Ford One-Touch Intelligent Start. To start the car you only need to turn the key to 'Start' and let it go. The car does the rest. From the OM: Turn the key to 4 (start), thenrelease the key as soon as the engine begins cranking. Your vehicle has a computer assisted cranking system that assists in starting the engine. After releasing the key from the 4 (start) position, the engine may continue cranking for up to 10 seconds or until the vehicle starts. Note: Cranking may be stopped at any time by turning the key to the off position So, are you saying the car starts itself too fast? It's not possible to turn the key so fast that the fuel pump doesn't have time to start. The flow of electricity in a wire is virtually instantaneous. It's 2011. The days of mechanical fuel pumps and carburetors when you had to pump the gas multiple times to start a car are gone . This is EFI. Even with the with the key off there is 35-40psi residual fuel pressure in the system at all times. Therefore the car will start immediately. Pull the fuse for your fuel pump. The car will still start and run for a few seconds, even with no power to the fuel pump. Did you ever hear of relieving the pressure in an EFI system before changing the fuel filter or doing other work involving fuel lines? What do you suppose is the reason for that? My car has failed to start at the first turn of the key twice in 2 years and both time were in the same week. The OP apparently has a problem but it's intermittent, thus making it hard to diagnose. First time I shrugged it off but it did it bad yesterday and I don't have an explanation...wasn't parked on incline, wasn't low on gas, didn't just fill up either....going to the dealer soon for other things so I will bring it up. frankqueen Posted December 4, 2011 Share Posted December 4, 2011 Similar issue with my 2006 Fusion V6 SE: I have begun to suspect some kind of hungup interlock switch for the transmission. FusionDiffusion Posted December 4, 2011 Share Posted December 4, 2011 If the neutral safety switch is bad, then the engine wouldn't even crank. If the theft light is blinking, then you might have a problem with the PATS system. If you're having starting problems the first thing I would check was the battery voltage and the fuel. Battery should be 12.6 volts or more and 87 octane is easier to start. Also, make sure you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to ON without starting the car. ccd228 Posted July 25, 2012 Share Posted July 25, 2012 My 2012 sport started that at 1600 miles. Dealer said overfilling a car could cause starting problems. I though that was bull and it was.After a few weeks back and forth to service and many check engine light laters with foul plugs they found the vapor management valve was not shutting. It was staying open. When I put gas in, it would not start. I'd have to try a few times and it would but it would barely go. Kinda like it had no gas and it struggled to go. After a few minutes it would go. I have had issues with this for the past year and a half and still have not got it fixed. Of course it is not giving any codes and the dealerships keep telling me to drive it until it gets worse. kuiphoja Posted November 8, 2012 Share Posted November 8, 2012 (edited) I purchased a 2010 Ford Fusion SEL V6 AWD about a month ago and one week after I bought it, I tried to start it one morning and it did nothing. The engine did not turn over, only the radio and lights came on. It was behaving as if the security system had been triggered. Thankfully the used car dealership I bought it from went out of their way to try and make it right. They brought it to a car repair shop... however, the problem could not be replicated after they reset the computer system. Eventually they had to bring it to an official Ford dealership so a Ford electronics technician could look at it. They too could not re-create the problem so they did what they thought would best fix the problem. They replaced the starter and relay. I drove the car for 2 weeks with no issues. But then on Tuesday (of this week), I tried starting my car and the same thing happened! I was obviously very frustrated but I called the dealership again and they arranged to have it towed. When I explained the problem to the tow truck guy, he tried starting the car in Park and nothing happened. But then he tried to start it in Neutral and it worked! He tried it several times and it would only start while in Neutral. SO... now the neutral safety switch is being replaced and the Ford dealership is making adjustments to the shift cable which works in conjuction with the neutral safety switch (or so I've been told). I'm getting my car back today so I'm praying this will fix the problem for good! And I really hope this can help someone else who is having the same problem. Try to see if your car will start in Neutral. If so, then maybe this is the answer to your problem too! Best wishes! They have done all tsb's that are out on the car and also replaced the throttle body thinking that may fix the problem. It has the "flight recorder" on it now but of course while it is being watched it has only not started once. The battery was just replaced a month ago after the original died at the dealership when they were putting the "fight recorder" on. They have checked the ground strap several times before. akirby Posted November 9, 2012 Share Posted November 9, 2012 Try turning the ignition ON (but don't start) for a few seconds, then start. That gives the fuel pump time to build up pressure. It turns over for about 10 seconds and then the starter cuts off. After the starter cuts off, you can then (without turning the key back to off) try and start the car again and it will always start the second time you try and start the car. And to make things more complicated, sometimes while it is cranking, the motor acts as if it is trying to start but never actually fires. This happened to me several times with my 2010 MKZ Sport and once with my 2012. I can't find the post right now but member Waldo explained this some time ago. I can't remember the details but this a random occurrence that is a characteristic of this engine. IIRC, it has something to do with the relative positions of the intake and exhaust valves when the engine is shut off. Perhaps Waldo will be good enough to explain this again. Like yours, whenever this happened my car always started on the second try. So why do you care if it always starts on the second try? In the past 40+ years of car ownership I've never owned one that didn't occasionally fail to start on the first try. This includes cars with carburetors, TBI and EFI. They said that they have done every tsb they can find for the issue. I have had it at three dealerships trying to figure out the problem often leaving them the car so that they can try and duplilcate the problem. The second dealership that I have taken it to multiple times said that they thought it could be the pcm but since they could not duplicate the problem there was nothing they could do. They basically told me to keep driving it until it got worse. It is just frustrating that a brand new car does this. Sometimes it is worse than others and sometimes it will go a month without doing it.
