Need help please: Advance Trac warning light

2010 Ford Fusion SEL V6: The Advance Trac warning light came on, along with a message to "Service Advancetrac." I parked my car to read the owner's manual. It said to get service for the car immediately. But when I started driving the car again, and the light turned off. (I hadn’t turned the engine off when I stopped to read the manual.) Then I drove around doing errands: stopped and started the car 3 separate times, but the light has not come back on. What is going on? Is it dangerous to drive the car? The steering wheel is noticeably looser - I noticed that before the warning light came on. I can literally turn the wheel slightly left & right (jiggle it) and the car continues to drive in a straight line. The steering column has been much sturdier for the almost 2 years I've owned the car. Can I continue driving, or does the car need to be serviced?

My Advancetrac light came on this morning and I got a message in the message center that said "service advancetrac". The light went out for awhile and then came back on. I called the dealer service dept and asked them about it, they said they get that a lot and usually it goes away if you shut the car off and turn it back on. If it persists I am supposed to set up a appointment to bring it in..

The car has been sitting for a few hours now, I am getting ready to go back out. Will see what the light does.

My Fusion is a SEL with AWD, The TCS light will FLASH once in awhile driving in the snow, like when I have to stop at a stop sign and then have a hard time getting going again, the light will flash, but I have never seen it come on and stay on.

When the TCS light is flashing, it means the system is being used (like you said, on slippery take offs, the wheels will slip and the TCS light will flash) - that is normal.

And as a side note - what akirby had mentioned above - the advancetrac issue just being a sensor that won't affect steering, is wrong.

Ford's AdvanceTrac system uses a plethora of sensors to monitor the car's speed and direction - including - ABS WSSs, Yaw sensor, lateral accelerometer, TPS, etc... but especially - the steering angle sensor. If the steering angle sensor goes wonky - it can affect how EPAS (electronic power steering assist) will function (and I have seen a faulty SAS shutdown EPAS several times).

So in short - the SAS can affect BOTH steering and TCS.

Please do take it to your dealer...

In my case, after 2 visits to the dealer they decided to replace the Power Steering Rack. In my case appeared Repair the Advancetrac and Power fail. The steering wheel got stiff, hard to turn. Apparently some problems in the connector of the Power steering rack.

Happened to my 2010. Power steering lost and service advance trac light on. Everytime this happened they had to replace the power steering rack (3 times). This is very well known issue with Ford and they have issued a recall on this. Unfortunately the recall didn't imclude the 2010s and I had to eat over $1,800. The car is long gone. Someone elses problem now.

I have a 2010 ford fusion se. Service power steering light came on.  I just paid $2,500 to get a new steering rack put in 8 mths ago, and here it went out again while I was on the highway.  This is ridiculous!!! Not sure why there is no recall for this life threatening issue. I can't afford to pay another big fix out of pocket, especially when I just got it fixed. I called ford dealership and they said it has a 2 year warranty but if it's a different issue,  I have to pay for another Dynastic ($100+) to find th e issue. 2 fixes with the power steering will cost me more then what the value of the car is worth. Fixing and selling it will only get me what I paid in repair. Electric power steering is the worse!! Stay away from ford!!
