Borla Exhaust

An exhaust system doesn't add that much power, but it won't hurt the car either, unless its a complete straight pipe and the pipes are too large, then the engine has too little back pressure and you'll lose a ton of power. I've heard the magnaflow, its pretty quiet. Personally, save yourself some money, but some flowmaster mufflers, and have them installed properly, you'll have a fantastic sound. My friends explorer, we went through a gibson exhuast, then a glasspack, then a flowmaster super 44, and ended with a flowmaster super 10 which has to be the best sounding vehicle ever. Super 10's will be very loud, and may make the fusion sound like a civic. Try going for a super 44, that may be the right one. You'll also save a hell of a lot of money, should be 80 for muffler and 100 to get it installed.

Check out the super 44, or the super 50 I think, those two may be your best bet. Any louder and you run into trouble sounding like a civic lol good thing about a muffler too. If the mechanic who puts it on uses exhaust clamps, he can easily swap it out for another one later if you don't like it, and you won't have to replace the whole system.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was thinking the same thing because I went to a Ford SVT dealership last Friday to see if the carry any type of performace exhaust for the Fusion and that would be a NO. I found a couple of websites that carry the flowmaster super 44 muffler and I ran into the same issue with the inlet/outlet. I just might have my mechanic take a quick look at it on a hoist and find out that way I suppose. check out hotexhaust.com

I honestly don't know...I'm in the same predicament as you are.....I certainly don't want it to sound like a civic, if you look at the previous posts it was recommended to use flowmaster super 44. This is why I have to do a little research because I would not be too impressed if I spend the coin just to have it sound like Japanese crap.

Does Borla have a system or it just a muffler? I'm surprised the SVT dealer couldn't get you the Magnaflow kit. I was a dealership that sold Steeda and Ford Racing products and we sold Magnaflow kits for trucks and Mustangs all the time. Never saw anything sold on a Fusion unfortunately.

Sorry for the last response guys. The super 44 I've heard on an explorer, and it sounded fantastic, obviously that engine was bigger but the muffler had an excellent tone to it. Wasn't too loud or too soft. I wish I could tell you the pipe diameter but I have a 3.0 and I think my pipe is a 2.5" then splits into two 2.25" pipes, or maybe two 2" pipes. Either way, if you can get a center to center muffler, that's usually the easiest way to go. But find a good welder, or mechanic who has exhaust experience and he'll lead you in the right direction. My exhaust mechanic explained that putting a few bends in a pipe isn't difficult, and he lifted the car to take a look which type of muffler to get. Flowmaster is a well respected company, I believe made in the U.SA. too, they are very reliable, and my local performance shop recommends them the most. They can really take a 2.5 and make it sound alot less ricy, with these flowmasters. Currently that explorer has a super 10, which I believe would be too loud for a Fusion, but sounds fantastic.

Well after spending way too much time on youtube listening to exhaust sounds I have decided to get the flowmaster super 44 with a chrome exhaust tip. I have heard some fusion with straight pipes which would absloutely drive me nuts after 15 minutes on the road, I have heard other brands which sound a little to foreign for me.

Thanks for the advise oldguy16

Well apparently going to my local mechanic to have the exhaust replaced isn't going to be as easy as I thought. I brought my car over to have it up on a hoist to see if he can handle the job. Man is that OEM muffler huge! and it doesn't help that the Inlet goes in right at the left corner of the muffler which is sitting right behind the coil spring mount. So I have to go to a Custom performance shop to have it all done....got a quote of 350 from one place, shopping around for a couple of other quotes!

It should not cost that much. The mechanic pays nothing for the pipe, or very little, it's an hour of work, no more than 150 bucks. I go to a Meineke, who does custom exhaust jobs, he always charges 100, even if he has to extend the pipe, put in a new one, weld or use clamps. He even replaced the hangers for free. If you have a pic of your stock exhaust system, post it please. I'm not sure what the 2.5 exhaust is like.

I never even thought of Meineke, I have a shop 10 minutes from my house....I just emailed them for a quote. I will try to take a picture tomorrow. I'll have to jack up the car. When I do I'll send you the pic....The cheapest I found the muffler for was 75 bucks, and with a chrome tip that's probably another 40-50 so I would say 225 to 250 sounds fair.

If you want to put a new tip on, then yea that'll cost you 40 or 50 bucks too, and you can just have the shop weld it on. It should take them no time. I could see total 225 not being so unreasonable. Obviously you'd have to pay cash then you could get the price down. If there are no bends, it makes the job even easier. You don't happen to live in NJ do you?

I live near Toronto Canada....Actually I have a friend of mine who recommended a shop to me and he said that I can ask the guys to try a couple of different mufflers on the car before they weld it on just to see if I like the sound, so I think I will go and take my car there for a quote.
