JoeyToronto
Interesting factoid about the Ford Fusion, Ford originally wanted to name it Futura but Pep Boys in the US had rights to the name for some tires they sell. Ford lost in court for the rights, so they named it Fusion.
drolds1
Futura was actually used by Ford first. The 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car was the basis for the original Batmobile used in the TV show. Later, the name was used on a model of Ford Falcon in the 60s. Ford didn't protect the name and lost the rights to it b/c they hadn't used it for more than 3 years. Pep Boys had registered it in 1990. Plans for the new car were announced at the 2003 NY auto show and they referred to it as Ford Futura. April 16, 2003 2003 New York: Ford looks to the Futura for new mid-sized sedan Automaker sees 800,000 units annually off Mazda6 platform By DAVID VERSICAL | Automotive News Ford Motor Co. plans to build a long line of mid-sized vehicles off a single platform. The effort will start with a sedan called the Ford Futura to go on sale in 2005. The strategy calls for a range of sedans, SUVs and so-called crossover vehicles. It will feed each of Ford's traditional brands -- Ford, Lincoln and Mercury. But it will draw heavily on a global partner by being built off the platform of the new Mazda6. When the Futura arrives in 2005, it will fill a gap in the middle of Ford's car lineup -- the so-called CD segment. That slot has been empty since 2000, when Ford stopped producing the Ford Contour and the Mercury Mystique.
raskell
Also in the early 1980's Ford also had the Fairmont Futura, I had the Mercury version, the Zephyr.
JoeyToronto
Nonetheless, Fusion or Futura both sound feminine..lol
Dyoct
Hence why trademark protection is very important. Sometimes as fans and customers we see some really weird lawsuits and we go "Huh? Really?" 800,000 units annually. I wonder how close FoMoCo got to this now. It is good to see the Fusion sales volume ramp over the years.
