Is the 2.3 just a noisy engine?

I've had my 2007 Fusion SE 2.3 since May or so. It is automatic. I always find upon startup I have to idle for a minute before leaving. Otherwise I get this noisy diesel like sound when I put it in gear. After a few seconds the sound goes away. The car has almost 80,000kms on it. The car runs fine, I have zero issues. I'm just wondering if this is just a normal noise this motor makes? Is it just because the motor is cold and I"m being paranoid?

Same for my Milan. The manual suggests idling for 10 minutes on a cold morning before shifting out of park. It definitely helps, but in my case, I don't want my garage being fumigated for 10 minutes every morning. It's rather noisy during normal driving as well, but not as bad as some other 4-bangers I've heard. The Duratec 23 is after all, a Mazda-designed engine, and they were more worried about performance than noise. And I'll tell you, if you get the revs up, this engine WILL haul.

Hi Photi. :D Just as an FYI to avoid confusion for others: You accidentally misread the Owners Manual. The Owners Manual/Ford do not suggest idling for 10 minutes before shifting out of park. Under most driving conditions, the vehicle only needs to idle for 10-20 seconds before driving.

What you are most likely mistakenly referring to is this passage in the Owners Manual (page 187 of the copy I have): "To avoid potential transmission damage at extremely cold temperatures (below -20°F [-30°C]), it is recommended that the vehicle be warmed up to normal operating temperature before driving at highway speeds above 50 mph (80 km/h). Normal operating temperature is normally reached after 10 minutes of moderate driving or idling."

All that means is to not start the car and drive directly onto a highway and do over 50 mph in -20F or below until the temp gauge shows the car is warmed up. So as long as you don't live right next to a highway and plan on driving right onto it, you can shift into D and drive the car almost immediately after starting (again, after a 10-20 second warm-up is sufficient). Just not immediately at highway speeds. And that warm up period takes about approximately 10 minutes of moderate driving and/or idling. It does not need to be idled for 10 minutes, just driven below highway speeds for 10 minutes.

Hope this clears up any confusion.

Good luck. :beerchug:

Just one misread word can throw you off. Glad you caught that. Don't want to confuse anybody else because I can't read. :banghead:

Hi Photi. :D Thanks for having the intelligence and maturity to understand I was only trying to help. :grouphug: For some odd reason, that does not always happen here (or on the Internet in general).

Good luck. :beerchug:
