sidewinder
Just a warning, while attempting to remove the rear view mirror on my 2010 Sport I barely pulled after releasing the lock tabs and a circle of glass pulled right out of the windshield. The car is still under warranty so I am going to see if the dealer will help. I have removed literally dozens of mirrors in fifteen years of auto body repair and have never had anything like this occur.

So what caused this? was it a defect
FusionDiffusion
I wouldn't call it a defect, just a characteristic. Here's my guess: Because this car has a SoundScreen windshield, the layer of butyl rubber between the panes is a little softer for sound deadening, and thus more susceptible to de-lamination. Because the adhesive on the mirror was apparently stronger than the bond between the glass and the laminate, the glass went with the mirror when it separated. Some of the mirror mounts are very hard to work with these days. You have to be very careful and work slowly. And of course, don't try to remove the mirror unless you absolutely have to.
Fusionpursuit
Should I now be concerned later with my Toll Transpoder? I have it stuck to my windshield by 3x 1" little suction cups. would it take out the laminate and glass someday? It often pops loose often anyway, and I have to re-stick one or 2 suctions sometimes. I just dont want to use the velcro adhesive, so I bought a toll tag bracket with suction cups to hold it.
FusionDiffusion
I think you should be okay with suction cups. If they don't stick, try cleaning the glass and the suction cups. If you can't get them off, you can use a sharp knife to get under the suction cup.
Fusionpursuit
Well my rear view mirror has a heavy mount, it has the auto-dimming mirror plus the neighboring rain sensor for the wipers and I bet it is meant to be permanently in place and have a strong bond (appears as if it is a heavy part)
richjmage
this also happened to me while at an auto sound and electronics store when I was to have the rearview mirror replaced with a rearview camera mirror. since they caused the problem, the windshield was repaired and paid for by their insurance company.
