Thoughts on the 2013 Fusion Ecoboost 2.0L replacing the Sport

Just wondering what everyone thought about the Sport going away and being replaced with the ecoboost. I believe its 237hp and 250 torque. From what I know it makes the Edge pretty fast, so I'm guessing equivalent performance numbers to the current sport. If it can get 26-28 combined mpg overall I'd be interested.

I think it will be close to the current sport but with much better fuel economy. Expect a ST version to surpass the current Sport in 12-18 months.

I was wondering about that. A loaded Sport with nav is around 32-33k and if they made a Sport version of the Fusion is would probably push it to $35,000 or so. Do you really think there is a market for a ST Fusion?

Hi omelet. :D Just to clear up a common misconception: The 2.0L EcoBoost is not the "replacement" for the Fusion Sport 3.5L engine. It is the "replacement" for the 3.0L V-6 in the SE and SEL. At introduction for the 2013 Fusion, there is no replacement for the Fusion Sport. There are S, SE and Titanium models. The Titanium trim designation simply replaces the SEL trim. designation and the 2.0L Ecoboost is the top level optional engine which "replaces" the 3.0L V-6 option in the SE, SEL.

For some quick background - Many people seem to forget that there was no Fusion Sport model with the larger, more powerful 3.5L for 4 model years in the first generation Fusion (2006-2009) until it was introduced with the 2010 models. Performance models are rarely/never available when a newly redesigned model is first introduced. Not by any automakers, not even Porsche, BMW Mercedes etc.. A manufacturer must first concentrate on making the bread and butter, volume models available, then they can concentrate on getting the performance models finalized.

Bottom line is there will be a Fusion Sport (or ST) available with a more powerful engine much sooner than the four years it took for the first generation Fusion to have one (as akirby stated). As an example, the Focus, which is only in its first year of U.S. availability has already seen the Focus ST version unveiled and it will be available later this year. So while we all want a performance version now, we also need to remember how things work and be patient.

Good luck. :beerchug:

Actually in the press release it does say that the 2.0L is the performace/sport version. That being said that probably means that its the "sport" version for now since they real sport version isn't ready yet :)

Any guesses what kind of engine they would put in it? 3.5 Ecoboost AWD? The thing would be a rocket.

I'm guessing the 2.0L turbo will be fairly close to the sport. The Hp is a bit less but it has 1 more ft-lb of tq. We all know that Hp sells cars but torque wins races.

I'm not sure of the weight of the new Fusion but if it's less then it will probably be faster, plus I believe you can get the turbo with a proper manual if I remember reading right.

You lose less in the drivetrain with a manual then auto.

Hi omelet. :D What Marketing people write for hype is always amusing, because that is what it is, just hype. However, to save me some searching for the exact quote you are referring to, since you know what to look for, would you copy and paste the paragraph here (or refer me to where it is in the press release)?

EDIT - Just looked briefly and found this ithe press release: "The 1.6-liter EcoBoost is expected to deliver best-in-class four-cylinder non-hybrid fuel efficiency of 26 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine – paired with a paddle-shifted six-speed SelectShift Automatic™ transmission, available 19-inch wheels and tires, and all-wheel drive with the ability to send additional torque to the rear – is the Fusion performance option".

Is that (or something similar) what you were referring to? Either way, as you guessed, they are merely stating that the 2.0 EcoBoost is the most powerful engine available at the moment, so it is the choice for those who want the most "performance" in their 2013 Fusion SE or Titanium model. It is not a "Sport" model. This also tells us it is not a "Sport model", since it is available in the "lesser" SE and Titanium models". However, whatever the marketing hacks call it, it is obviously not the "Sport" version, since there is no Sport model available yet. No "Sport" designation (or an equivalent). No "Sport" trim. No "Sport suspension". No "Sport" wheels. This all equals no "Sport" model. And again, this is because no automaker releases their top performance version when a model first debuts. Development takes longer. As mentioned previously, four years for the last generation Fusion (2006-2010), but much sooner for this Fusion.

Future Sport/ST engine? Not likely the 3.5 EcoBoost. Nothing concrete, but perhaps a higher performance 2.0L EcoBoost (there are test versions with over 300HP out there), a 2.5 EcoBoost or 2.7L nano-V-6 EcoBoost. For a good idea what may inhabit the engine bay of the next generation Fusion Sport/ST, wait to see what engine/engines will be standard/optional in the 2013 Lincoln MKZ later this year.

But to reiterate, marketing hype aside, there is obviously no 2013 Fusion Sport model yet and the current 2.0L EcoBoost is the replacement equivalent for the 3.0L V-6, not the 3.5L V-6.

Hope this makes it more understandable.

Good luck. :beerchug:

That's the press release I was referring too. You know honestly though I think I'd be hard pressed to wait 12-18 months for a sport version if the 2.0 matches my current 2010 sport.

Since you seem to be the expert any guesses on the performance/fuel economy of the 2.0l in the fusion? It gets the fwd Edge to 60mph in 7.5 seconds, so I'm guessing a Fusion would probably knock it down to like 6.5 seconds. Also the 4000lb Edge gets 24mpg overall on fueleconomy.gov, so maybe 27-28 combined for the 2013 Fusion?

First, I'll say I'm a 2010 Fusion Sport owner.

I love it and it's a great car with more than enough power for any sane 4-door sedan driving. That said it was never really a performance car. It's a decent V6 with a "sporty" firm suspension and the only one outside of luxury brands that offered AWD, except maybe Subaru. It's performance numbers were only competitive with the same year V6 Altima, Mazda6, or Accord.

All this to say, that they should save a performance version for something that actually blows the doors off the mainstream competition and can run with the luxury brands without the niceties and expensive badge. A 2.7 V6 or 3.0 V6 EcoBoost could easily deliver that, maybe even a 4-cyl.

As bbf2530 mentioned, I can't see the 3.5L Ecoboost going in there. Might steal too many buyers from the Taurus SHO :)

Well someone mentioned the rumor of the 2.5L-3.0L Ecoboost smaller V6 being introduced and bringing it in the 300HP range, This is really is info based off a possible new Mustang Engine geared toward the SVO style, but could this be a possible Fusion option?

Adding a 2.5L smaller ecoboost V6 along with all those new ecoboost I4s in a existing line-up will be very confusing :P, oh wait never mind I will finally get my dream of a factory Duratec 25 Turbo and it will be the new Contour SVT :D

Some of the new turbo 4 cylinder engine lines along with some higher liter and slightly higher hp regular 4 cylinder seems like confusing marketing to me.

Such as the Dodge Dart offering 2 engines at same hp and 1 higher litre version at hardly more hp all at once, oh wait more torque?

2.0L 160hp

1.4L Turbo 160hp

2.4L 184hp

Well if Ford may want to offer a Fusion Sport, It should be more in the line of the Buick Regal GS, that thing is awesome, but sadly it is detuned and FWD only compared to the Opel AWD variant

Still no manual trans in the 2.0L from what I've read...disappointing but oh well I'm okay with my 2011 Sport for now, until I hand it down to my wife and get me a new Mustang!

Remember the Focus ST will have the 2.0L Ecoboost with a manual trans. I expect a Fusion ST to have a 2.7L Ecoboost pushing 300 hp with a manual but you'll probably have to wait another year or so.

When a Hyundai Sonata 2.0 Turbo puts out 274HP/269TQ on regular 87 octane fuel, Ford needs to take the 2.0 Ecoboost back to the drawing board and START OVER.

Ford gets 270 lb/ft of torque from the 2.0EB. The Hyundai gets more HP but at 500 higher RPM. Off the line the 2.0EB should be very competitive. But that Hyundai engine is impressive.

I believe that the 2.0L is in fact the replacement for the 3.0L V6 as it is a 2.0 237 HP o think. The fusion sport didn't come out til 2010, so it took about 4 years for it to be available. Maybe in the 2014 or 2015 years they will come out with something to replace the sport, maybe an eco boost twin turbo v6?

A few people have said a sport version is coming, but I'm not holding my breath. 2014 or 2015 at the very very earliest. They need to get the model out the door first and considering there are so many versions that isn't an easy task.

That beind said I believe the 2.0l ecoboost will probably be the same in performance as the current Sport which is good enough for me...
