Rear Door Locks

When I have passengers in the back seat, they complain that the doors don't unlock automatically when the car stops and the ignition is turned off.

I thought it was the kiddie locks but it's not. It's a small thing but you have to unlock them manually to get out of the back of my 2011 FFH.

Is this normal on all the Fusions?

Hi wofam. :D Yes, it is "normal" on the Fusion (and most Ford passenger vehicles) for reasons of safety. The rear doors unlock when a front door is opened, the power unlock button is actuated or the rear door unlock/lock button is used. And the fronts do not unlock when the ignition is turned off either. The fronts only unlock when the door handle is pulled, power door lock button actuated or unlock /lock button used.

It is a safety precaution for several reasons - First, it is assumed that it will help prevent a child in the backseat from darting out of the car and into traffic while hopefully not stopping an adult who it is assumed will be able to flip the lock and get out on their own without using too much brain power. Second, most people don't want any doors unlocking automatically when the ignition is turned off, since it puts the driver and passengers at risk of someone unexpectedly gaining entry to the car while we happen to just be sitting there after innocently turning off the ignition. So the door locks operate as described above.

While there are some options (as explained in the Owners Manual) they can not be programmed to open when the ignition is turned off.

Good luck. :beerchug:

Yes, it's normal. As BBF stated, all doors unlock only after a front door has been opened. If you're not getting out, you can push the unlock button on your door or teach you rear passengers where to push on the latch to unlock the door. Unlike the front doors, the rear doors do not mechanically unlock when the handle is pulled. This is a child safety feature. If the child locks were engaged, the rear occupants would not be able to open the doors from the inside at all, even with the doors unlocked.

I don't know about the weird FFH spaceship instrument cluster, but with the normal Fusion the "doors auto-unlocking when a front door is opened" is an option that can be enabled or disabled via the steering wheel controls & instrument cluster. As well auto-lock can be disabled altogether. Personally I disabled it because I don't see a point, but then again I don't drive around Detroit (which Ford designers might).

Just to recap - you have to turn off the ignition and open your door for the rear doors to unlock automatically if you have auto-unlock turned on.

If you don't like that just turn off auto-locks and they'll never lock in the first place.
