Auto Headlights Install on a SE! Easy!

I have a 2010 Fusion SE and it doesn't have the auto headlights which I really miss from my previous vehicle. I did a search on the forum and many stated that it wasn't worth the trouble because the SJB would not be programed, the wiring harness was missing and you would have to install a sun load sensor.

 

I decided to pull out the wiring diagrams and compare the difference between the SE and SEL which has the auto headlight feature. The auto headlights use a violet/white white that is an input to the SJB that runs from the headlight switch.which is present in the SE. The headlight switch is a ground controlled switch. By jumping the wire to ground I was able to verify that the SJB could activate the auto feature. With the headlight switch unplugged and grounding the wire the light come on then after the ignition is turned off the headlight will go out after about 15 seconds (the headlight time delay feature). If you order a headlight switch for an SEL with the auto feature you will have auto headlights. To control the headlights for night/day operation you with have to install a sun load sensor. Unfortunately the sun load sensor harness is not present on the SE but it would be had to install. Buy a sun load sensor ( $30). It has four terminals. Two are used for the auto headlights (sense wire and ground) and the other two are used for the dual AC climate control which your not going to use. Basically you have to run one wire from the sensor down to the SJB which is going to run into the 52 pin connector on pin #46. The other wire from the sun load sensor will go to a good ground. The sun load senor is located in the defroster panel trim. You can carefully remove this and there is an outline on it showing you the location of where to cut to install the sensor.

 

I've ordered my headlight switch form the local Ford dealer ($50) and have order the sun load sensor online ($30). When everything is installed I'll take pictures and explain the procedure. You could just install the auto headlight switch and in the auto position the headlights and tail lights would come on and stay on anytime the key is in the on position and this might be desirable for anyone wanting daytime running lights.

So you're saying that if you install the SEL headlight switch with auto posistion *without* installing the sun sensor , anytime the key is turned on it will turn on your tail/headlights. But if you install the switch *and* the sun sensor it will turn them on only at night?

Finished installing the light sensor and the programming is present to allow the sensor to function. Remove the defroster bezel from the top of the dash. When you look at the bottom of the bezel you will notice the spot were the sensor would sit. I used a dremel tool to cut out the spot for the sensor. The connector I used was an extra four wire pigtail that was extra from my car started. Pushed in nice a tight. The sensor has four terminals but you only use two. The other terminals are used for dual heat/AC inputs for the auto HVAC. There is an opening in the defroster that allows you to feed the wires down to the SJB. Go to connector 52 then pin #46. This will be a empty cavity. Your going to have to find the correct female pigtail. Starting in 2010 ford when to a very small female terminal and the only place I could find one was from the SJB of a wrecked 2010 F150 at the local graveyard. My local deal didn't have anything. Finish by grounding the remaining wire from the light sensor. Works perfect. I did take some pictures but the quality is bad. I'll take some better pictures and post.

 

I think the moderator of the forum should make this a sticky. When I bought my SE I was disappointed that it didn't have the auto feature. I searched the forum and was told it was impossible to do and that it wasn't worth the effort. You would have to run new wires and pull the dash apart to install the light sensor and it just wasn't worth it. This cost me around $70 dollars and about 1 hour of my time. The hardest part was finding a connector for the light sensor and a small female terminal to install into the SJB. I'll take better pictures and post some diagrams of the connector configurations. Alldata has some good connector view diagrams.

I want to thank you for making this known on this forum. I have a 2010 Fusion Sport and is frustrates me to no end why they didn't make automatic headlights a standard option on this car. But it is what it is, and now for about $50 and an hour in the garage I can have this. Thanks again!

 

As far as the part numbers go, that would depend on the year Fusion you have. The earlier models use a differnt switch than the 2009-2010's, and the 2011-2012's use a different switch to my knowledge.

I've been attempting to track down the parts to try this out, I ordered one headlight switch for my 2010 Fusion SE (Motorcraft SW-6602) and it wasn't the right size. I also ordered a Sun Load sensor (DG9z-13A018-a) which looks like it will work but I can't seem to find the wiring harness for it anywhere. Anyone have a reliable/easy place to find the correct parts. It seems no where has accurate pictures or descriptions. If anyone had the part #'s for a 2010 i'd appreciate it. I don't want to order the wrong thing again.

First let me thank ruggybuggy for providing the inspiration to tackle this fairly easy upgrade. Getting the light switch was easy and inexpensive for my 2010 Fusion SE. Installing wss even easier.....unplug the old one, plug in the new. The trick here was the sun load sensor. My research informed me that the only sensor that would work on my car would be the DG9z-13A018-a. Any good Ford Dealer parts place should be able to procure one for about $32.00. Now I could have just sautered some wires onto the four pins of this sensor (less expensive) but I decided to get the connector for this sun load sensor for a "clean" installation. Part number is Motorcraft WPT-1013.

 

Now the hard and difficult part is getting underneath the Driver's side of the dashboard and disconnect the "52 pin" connector from the smart junction box or SJB as they call it. It has a little lever that you push to the left to unlock it from the junction box. Now within this one connector are two individual connector blocks that you can slide out by releasing a liitle tab. Once you do that you will see on either ends numbers. For example, one will have "1" on the left and "13" on the right on just one side. You basically one to get to the one that has the "40" on one side and "52" on the other. Just count backwards from the 52 pin and get to pin #46......yup.....its empty. We have plenty of ecology and pick your part auto wreckers in town but none carry any four year old wrecked cars of any type so good luck looking for a female terminal for this car to fit into the 46 pin tunnel. I just used some good quality automotive electrical wire (16 guage) and threaded down the 46 pin tunnel and used a little glue (small dot of expoxy will do) to keep the wire in place. Once this was done, I slid the connectors back into the one locking connector and connected it back onto the smart junction box.

 

I connected one of the "miiddle" wires from the sun load sensor to this pin 46 and connected one of the "outside" wires from the sun load sensor to a solid ground. Took a little try and error. How do you know which one? Well if you are outside in the daylight and you connect the right wires together......the lights will just turn off......if they stay on....you have one of the wrong wires connected.

 

It was pretty cool when I first completed this project.....now it's if they had came with the car. Through this project I have become very confident and knowledgeable of the cars Smart Junction Box.

 

Hope this post helps others tackle this very cool mod.

I've been using the "auto" headlight switch (Motorcraft SW-6602) by itself for the last several months. It works great by itself.

But now i am interesed in integrating the sun load sensor. Installation took only about ten minutes.

 

--- Please, which of the four pins on the sunload sensor connects to pin #46 ?

 

And which pin on the sunload sensor is connected to ground ?

 

Knowing these two things can save a lot of time for the rest of us. Thanks in advance !

I realize that this post is quite old, but it inspired me to add auto headlights to my 2009 SE. All the parts are on their way, but I have already received the headlight switch from the SEL with the automatic setting. It was incredibly easy to install. However, if I turn it to automatic even with the key not in the ignition, the lights turn on. When I turn the car off the the headlights in the automatic setting, the car dings at me like it would with the other switch when my lights were on. Did I get a bad switch? Any other ideas?

Read the first 3 posts. It's because you haven't installed the sun load sensor yet.

Yes. I haven't got around to putting in the switch yet (Arctic Cat repair) but I have confirmed it by testing. When I get a chance I'll write a full review.

 

Right, but my understanding is that with the SEL switch installed, the headlights should turn on and off with the ignition being on or off when automatic is selected on the headlight switch.

 

Am I misunderstanding this? Do I still need to manually turn the headlight switch to off when the ignition is off until the sun load sensor is installed?

Alright, is anyone familiar with the differences in the SJB between the 2008-2009 and 2010-2012? There seems to be some, but I am not sure what. I've found where the sunload sensor is supposed to install on my 2009, is it significantly different than the 2010? I can't seem to find any diagrams for the 2010 but I imagine that it will, or should, work similarly with the SJB as the sensor itself is the same part.

 

Here are some diagrams for the 2009, are they similar?

Hopefully you're still on this board, or maybe someone else knows, did you ever get your 2009 Fusion headlights sorted out? I just bought an '09 yesterday and would like to retrofit auto headlamps. Seems as though 09 and 10's are vastly different, the retrofit seems easy enough but I'm not sure which pin on the body control module I need to tap into for the light sensor.

I know this is old, but I wanted to let you know it is still useful. Just did the switch only (going to try daytime running lights) and worked great. Thanks!
