Rear Defroster

I just purchased my 2009 ford fusion SE a few weeks ago. I live in Illinois and it snowed a little a couple times. When i turn on the rear defroster i noticed the middle of the defroster doesnt work. I thought the defroster works all the way around. Is that normal? Or is it a defect? I have 29,000 miles on it and about 2 months left of bumper to bumper warranty left on it. Would that cover it? Thanks for your help in advance.

If the painted wires on the inside of the window are scraped and broken, current will no longer flow and you won't get any heat. Can you see any breaks if you look closely?

Your car still has factory warranty, so if it's a defect, then it will be covered. However, if the dealer determines it's due to owner damage (you or the previous owner) it's won't be covered. Typically they deem breaks "owner damage" BTW. If you see a break, I would just order one of the self-repair kits and fix it yourself for $15.

P.S. Try to avoid posting the same question multiple times in different sections. One at a time, please!

thanks for the advise. Luckily its snowing now in chicago and i'm gonna take a good look at the wires in a little bit. before turning on the rear defroster and i'll take a pic of it. How does one "owner damage" a rear defroster? Do you have a link to that self repair kit so i can take a look at it? Thanks again.

It could be as simple as someone putting a box or parcel on the rear deck and shoving it up against the rear window. A corner might rub back and forth going over the bumps while driving. Someone might also have put a big sticker on the inside and took some of the paint with it when they pealed it off. There are numerous possibilities when you're talking about how people treat and use their cars.

Here's a kit. http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-15067-Window-Defogger-Repair/dp/B000HBI9YQ

All you do is mask off the edges of the line and then paint on new materials where the gap is.
