Read this thread first: http://www.fordfusionforum.com/index.php?/topic/2507-how-can-i-find-my-thermostat-and/

That will show you how to replace the thermostat housing (you should change yours while you're doing the pump). You will have to loosen the power steering pump and set it aside. You might be able to take the pump out the fender housing without raising the engine. You might also have to remove the pulley from the pump before it can come out.

As an aside, are you sure your pump is bad? Most people have trouble with the thermostat on that engine, not the pump.

Total book time is 1 hour so look to take you about three to four hours. Very simple job.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Vehicle Jacking and Lifting.
  2. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding See: Service and Repair.
  3. Disconnect the degas bottle-to-radiator hose from the degas bottle.
  4. Remove the nut, bolt and position the degas bottle for access to the lower degas bottle hose.

    1. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

[*]Disconnect the lower degas bottle hose and remove the degas bottle.

[*]Loosen the 3 coolant pump pulley bolts.

[*]Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to Drive Belts, Mounts, Brackets and Accessories.

[*]Remove the 3 bolts and the coolant pump pulley.

    • To install, tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).

  1. NOTICE: Make sure the coolant pump is correctly seated to the engine block before installing and tightening the fasteners, or damage to the coolant pump may occur. Remove the 3 bolts and the coolant pump.

  1. NOTICE: Early build vehicle (built before July 6, 2009) cooling systems are filled with Motorcraft® Premium Gold Engine Coolant. Late build vehicle (built on or after July 6, 2009) cooling systems are filled with Motorcraft® Specialty Green Engine Coolant. Mixing coolant types degrades the corrosion protection of the coolant. Do not mix coolant types. Failure to follow these instructions may result in engine or cooling system damage.NOTICE: Genuine Mazda® Extended Life Coolant and Motorcraft® Specialty Green Engine Coolant are very sensitive to light. Do NOT allow these products to be exposed to ANY LIGHT for more than a day or two. Extended light exposure causes these products to degrade. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

I know that this is a very old thread but I would like to know if the original poster or anyone else that has replaced the water pump used original motorcraft parts or another brand. All input would be greatly appreciated.

Well i am back this time i noticed that my fusion has a sign of a wet spot on top of the pulley beneath the power steering pulley. Is this the water pump and is it going bad. Please help if possible. If i have to change the water pump i will also change the thermostat since they probably have to remove the power steering pump and also should i change the hoses that go to the thermostat, if anyone has the part number to those hoses i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
