IIKings 9:20
Ridiculous. Notice the lack of a B pillar cross member. Pray you never flip it. Even with high strength steel if you are not sliced to ribbons, the rim of roof support may well collapse in a multiple roll over. and squish your gord like a melon. I think Ford is doing a better job of roof structure since their Volvo ownership but I don't trust this thing at all. Noise, heat, etc are other reasons I hate it. I hope they make it a stand alone option and on non glass cars, I hope they have a B pillar cross member roof support. Look at this bit of history that is not so ancient (without gigantic glass roofs- note the B pillar cross members). This is a double roll test to see what might happen in a two roll crash. akirby
Wow, what a drama queen. There is a cross member between the movable and unmovable sections. BTW - this is basically the same as the vista roof on the Edge, MKX, MKT and Flex - just a bit deeper opening. And I guess you never heard of a convertible, either.
IIKings 9:20
redriderbob, I should have stated in my first reply something positive about the link and for bringing the info to the forum. I jumped right into the safety aspects. I apologize for coming off so negatively in my reply. I'll reiterate, akirby, ridiculous. That cross member is at the C pillar not the B pillar my man, the B pillar cross member is maintained with a regular sunroof, not the vista roof. Yes, I am familiar with convertibles, I owned a 500SL with a reinforced A pillar and a pop up roll bar otherwise I would not consider any convertible. No roll bar and a flimsy A pillar is good way to get your head squished into a grease spot on the pavement if you flip- roll overs occur infrequently: about 3% of all crashes but 1/3 of all deaths. That is a statistic to remember. I know at least 10 people who have flipped cars and am familiar with countless others. is an example of a flimsy A pillar and this is just a frontal crash, not a roll over. In my line of work, I have seen many people damaged by glass of all types in car crashes (this gigantic thing only adds to the risk) and the real drama is in the emergency room and operating room trying to fix these victims. That is where one realizes first hand the dangers of this and many other idiotic product designs that kill and maime people for life. Have you ever seen knee cap split open by a keychain dangling down from the dash board? That is why I have NO KEYS or ornaments on my ignition key- only a soft leather fob- I could go on but I would not want to seem too dramatic  Edited April 11, 2012 by IIKings 9:20
akirby
I could go on but I would not want to seem too dramatic  I'd say it's a little too late for that. Deathtrap? Seriously?
IIKings 9:20
Deathtrap? Seriously? Only if you roll it, potentially. No issues with a gigantic glass roof if you keep it upright- if fact, seatbelts won't ever be needed if you never wreck. To each his own, as for me, I'll keep metal over my noggin. Still ridiculous- same for MB, Audi, et.al with so called panoramic roofs.

Do you think one B pillar cross member is going to prevent the roof from being crushed in a rollover? Isn't it likely they beefed up the A and C pillars and side supports considerably? I bet it's actually safer in a rollover than a steel roofed vehicle from 15 years ago that you probably thought was just fine.
