What type of bike rack should I get?

Recommended Posts

I just got my fusion last week and I would like to haul 2 bicycles for when I go trail riding, but i'm unsure on what type of rack I should get. I really don't want to put a hitch on my car and i'm scared that a trunk rack will scratch it. As well as fall off as I had an uncle lose his 2500 bike on the highway a while back (idk if he had it secure or not, but still a concern I have) I looked into a roof rack, but it seems like a hassle to put it on and take it off, as I don't want to leave it on all the time since I like the look of my car without it. haha I have a roof rack on my mountaineer currently and have always left it on, but i've put that in storage until the winter. Of course i'm up to any and all suggestions that all of you may have.

The trunk racks work fine. If you make sure the pads and your car are clean, then it shouldn't scratch the paint. If the rack and bikes are properly secured, they will not fall off. And of course you don't want to leave your bike on your rack with your car parked any amount of time since anyone could easily just take it off and ride it away. I've never hand any issues hauling bikes around on cars with trunk racks. Some people don't use all the straps or use them incorrectly and have problems.

I have the same question or conundrum.... I have the factory spoiler on my car. Will I be able to find a trunk setup?

I have the factory spoiler on mine and I use a Saris trunk rack for two bicycles. I would HIGHLY recommend the Saris racks, as they are well worth the money. I leave it on my car all summer and it is rock solid. They also sell a locking cable which I route into the trunk and around the latch to keep it from getting stolen. If I lock the bicycle to the cable with my U-Lock it's pretty theft-proof (the bike and the rack) if I have to park for long periods of time.

Honestly a roof rack is the best way to go, i got one for my 2009 fusion and it looks and works great. But since i worked in a bike shop for years the only brand of roof racks i trust are thule, you pay a high price but its totally worth it in the end. and trust me trunk racks can be just as annoying to take off and put on.

I've heard that roof racks are bad for the weatherstripping (creates a gap in the door), is that true?

well there are 2 different piece of weather stripping on my car, an outside piece which you can see when the door is closed and this piece does get warped because of where the roof rack sits, i do not know if it is warped permanently because I havent taken off my rack since i put it on. But the inside piece of weather stripping should be fine and a roof rack shouldnt cause any problems. If you have a website where you read that could you post the link i would like to read it. Thank you and best of luck. I will let you know if i find out any more info on the weather stripping
