NYPD uses hybrids for some duties

There are some other videos on Youtube from some other forces who use it for secondary duties or just demo cars from companies that outfit emergency lights onto cars.

A Fusion wouldn't be branded as an Interceptor. That implies a police spec rated for pursuits

There is no such thing as a Fusion Police Interceptor. The only Police Interceptors are the Crown Victoria's (no longer made), Police Interceptor Sedan (Taurus variant, beginning 2013 model year) and Police Interceptor Utility (Explorer variant, beginning 2013 model year). Just a pet peeve of mine when everyone thinks because it has lights and a siren it must be a Police Interceptor. I work around emergency vehicles daily. So to disspell myths, here are the official names for police package and special service vehicles currently available:

Ford Police Interceptor Sedan

Ford Police Interceptor Utility

Chevrolet Caprice 9C1 (pursuit rated)

Chevrolet Caprice 9C3 (undercover/detective version. Not recommended for pursuits)

Chevrolet Impala 9C1 (pursut rated)

Chevrolet Impala 9C3 (undercover/detective version. Not recommended for pursuits)

Chevrolet Tahoe PPV (pursuit rated. PPV = Police Package Vehicle)

Chevrolet Tahoe SSV (Not pursuit rated. 4WD. SSV - Special Service Vehicle)

Dodge Charger Pursuit (Added the "Pursuit" name as of the 2013 model year. Prior, it was a Police Package)

Ram Special Service (New for 2013)

Dodge Durango Special Service (New for 2013)

Since it's only a fleet vehicle, the Fusion would only be used for small, but critical light-duty applications like mall security, parking enforcement, and doughnut runs. Dedicated vehicles (GhostRider's list above) are used for true pursuit and emergency functions and are fitted with barriers so you can put criminals in the back seat. Pursuit vehicles are made more heavy duty so they can drive over curbs, go off road, go on high speed chases without overheating, and contain provisions for all the electronic equipment.

In other words, I don't think you'll ever see another Fusion in your rearview mirror chasing you with its lights on.

Maybe the Fusion Hybrids do pursuits in NYC where you can walk faster than traffic :)

Off topic but I think it's funny that the Caprice has an "undercover/detective/street-appearance" package given that there's no civilian Caprice available. They should just put a Pontiac logo on it!

I find that odd too. I hear there is a retail Caprice coming to the US. I also think Chevy messed up by putting a floor shifter in a police vehicle, which the Caprice has. That is valuable real estate for police equipment.

The Caprice PI has a specially designed console for patrol work. The detective version has a full console.

I have seen a handful of local PDs using Fusions. These tend to be small to medium sized towns not tasked with highway patrol. A town near mine has at least one 2010-2012MY I see on patrol regularly. It is fully marked, full lights, standard local PD antennas, but no divider or other signs of heavy-duty use. I have seen it doing traffic stops on surface streets. It actually looks pretty good in uniform.

What is a Caprice "PI"?..lol. I guess every police vehicle is a "Police Interceptor" huh?  (despite the list above and "Police Interceptor" being a Ford trademark).

The point I was making was that that middle area between the seats is needed for a police equipment console. Not to mention with the way MDT's swing around, that factory center console is just improper. I know its moved to the side for the 9C1 vs a full console for a 9C3. However, all other police vehicle applications have it on the column, where it belongs.

Yeah I drive an Impala at work and don't have two nice things to say about them. If I recall, ours came prewired for lights and emergency equipment. Also I believe they came with high performance tires. However the V6's in our cruisers are pathetic and everything about the car in general is cheap, not to mention poorly build. Probably the 9C3 version....

If you check the door sticker, you can tell if its a 9C1 or 9C3. Typically, PD's wont order 9C3's for patrol use.

The 06+ Impalas (retail or police) are the most UNCOMFORTABLE things I have ever sat in.

This is a 12 minute video of the new Ford Police vehicles based on the sedan and utility. The Ford man explaining it is very good and tells how they developed the cars with the help of LEO's. We will be seeing them soon.

The university nearby uses SE Fusions in Ingot Grey for their parking ticket duties... don't know why they don't use something smaller or cheaper, but whatever.

I guess that's quite the logical jump from when they bought 6 new Dakotas (quad cab, 4x4, V8) to do the parking enforcement jobs in '07.

I'll try and grab a picture sometime.

As much as I like the Fusions, I would not want to use any of them as a patrol vehicle. Quite possibly for an administration, detective or undercover vehicle where non-uniformed personnel and those who dont need to wear a duty belt. However, as I said in this thread earlier, there are other police rated/purposed vehicles available that will work just fine.

I really hate when my CVPI is down for service and I have to use the wife's Fusion to get to/from work. I am not that big a guy and with my duty belt and all, Its annoying. I cant even buckle up because of my holster and the center console in the way. I often have to remove my portable radio and have it on my lap as I drive or its crammed against the door.
