ctrcbob
1. Have my Sister and Brother-in-law visiting from up North, driving an 05 Freestyle AWD, (3.0 engine and CTV Transmission). Said he was getting 25mpg indicated on his readout, for the whole trip on the Interstates. 2. I stopped for gas yesterday on my MKZ. My readout read 18.7 mpg, but I did the math, and the true reading was 17.9. Sounds ok EXCEPT half of this driving was on two lane roads within the county, and the other half was in the towns. If this was all in town driving, it would be ok, but it should have been better. (Well I guess its better than 13mpg that the guzzler on this group [boz] gets)

Our mileage is improving somewhat. Just passed 2,160 miles and the mileage has climbed from 13 mpg to 14.8 mpg for all in-city driving, calculated the old-fashion way, number of gallons used divided into the number of miles driven. The on-board computer said 14.6. Maybe, just maybe we'll get to the wonderful 17.9 mark you are getting, which would be delightful.
ctrcbob
I am convinced that the reason for poor milage on these V6 Fusions is the Transmissions, and not the engines. My sisters other car is a 97 Taurus, 24V Duratech V6, the same engine as in the Fusions. The only real difference is that her 97 Taurus has the Four Speed Automatic. On the open road, that Taurus gets about the same gas milage as most Fusions/Milans/Zephyrs however around town, it gets much better than our "great Six Speed transmissions" or even the Six Speed transmission that is found in the Ford Edge/Lincoln MKX. (Different six speed, but still two gears that are not needed, but keep the engine spinning fast at lower speeds, where it eats up the gas). Even my 02 (and two previous 98's) Continental with a 4.6 32V Intech engine gets the same, or better milage than this 3.5 engine and Fusion 3.0 engines. My Continental gets 18mpg around the county and averages 27mpg on the open road on a long trip. (26 to 29mpg). In addition, the Continental has a larger engine, and is heavier, although the power is only 10hp more than the MKZ or Edge/MKX. (My two 98's were the same hp, 265, as the MKZ/Edge/MKX). (On my 98's, I twice averaged 30mpg on the streach of road between Somersville WV and Erie PA - must have been going downhill with the wind to my back )
Dyoct
The Fusion 3.0 V6 is more revised than the Taurus Duratec. It has a different accessory line, different cams, different intake, and stricter emissions. PS. got 19mpg city driving this weekend, just didn't let her wind out past 5K on the tach.

Not to mention the new engines have VVT, much lower emissions and more power.

ctrcbob
What really burns me is that my Continental(s) get better milage than either Boz's Fusion or my MKZ. (Now looking for an older everyday beater with a manual, 4cyl that I can use whenever I need to go out for a "loaf of bread", or just in the rain. Want to save the MKZ and Continental for longer trips).
urnews
Glad to hear things are finally improving. I certainly hope the trend -- if one tankful can be called a trend -- continues as the car gets broken in. We now have about 2,200 miles on it.

" Must be all the detuning of the DOHC "InTech" engine to keep the AX4N trans from exploding...
Dyoct
Programming probably looks something like this: Power Efficiency Emissions Pick Two My built up 90 SHO has no cats, yet it runs like a champ and gets great gas mileage for what it is. However, the stock 90, used to have a performance cat system and the previous owner had to get a brand new OEM ypipe with cats to pass emissions. I asked if I could keep the spare performance part because I didn't need to pass emissions since I wasn't going to register it in GA. Damn thing runs fine, and I guess it's doing my part to keep air clean, but the mileage does suck. Granted it's always doing north of 6K.
