Ran out of gas

I have a 2007 Ford Fusion SEL V6 with approx 12K miles. I ran out of gas today, can I cause any sort of damage to the vehicle. I have already damaged my ego and was quite embarrassed.

The only damage I can think of would be to the fuel pump (the fuel cools the pump) but I doubt running out of fuel one time would be enough to damage it. The car is probably fine.

Here's a novel idea:

There's a collection of paper bound together by glue and hidden in a secret door on the right side of your dashboard cryptically called an "Owner's Manual."

The answer to your riddle lies within the mysterious depths of this tome!

Because I have the MKZ, not the Fusion, I don't know how the Fusion warns you that you are very low on fuel and about to run out of gas. Does the Fusion have a low gas warning light?

My MKZ starts to flash a low fuel warning in the message center when the computer calculates I have only 50 more miles on the tank. (Only happened to me once).

My Milan also displays that LOW FUEL message when under an estimated 50 miles are left in the tank. I can't see why the Fusion wouldn't have the same thing. Maybe the guy hit the RESET button to clear the message and just kept driving?

Ok, smarty pants. This is what the owner's manual says:

Running out of fuel

Avoid running out of fuel because this situation may have an adverse

effect on powertrain components.

How does that answer the original question?

Running out of fuel -

1) the lean mixture could cause major detonation issues.

2) Lots of NOX emissions. Only if you care Mr. Gore. Go pay that $30k electrical bill!

3) The garbage collected in the tank could be caught in the pump and/or fuel filter.

4) As mentioned - the pump could be damaged by lack of lube.

5) Ticket - careless driving???

6) Getting honked at?
