steveweis2001
Power steering pump makes a chirping noise when engine is cold. After engine warms up the noise goes away. Nothing abnormal noted in steering. Has anybody else noticed this? How hard is it to replace the pump? 2007 Ford Fusion SEL 2.3L.
FusionDiffusion
Did you check the fluid level cold?

FusionDiffusion
Next question is are you sure it's the power steering pump and not the belt? Does the chirp get louder, change pitch, or change speed when you move the steering wheel in park? An audio or video recording would be helpful. I suggest you watch this video: Edited December 2, 2012 by FusionDiffusion

After further troubleshooting, I am not sure it is the power steering pump. What is known is that it only occurs when the engine is cold, it does not change with engine RPM, and seems to be getting worse. I don't see any obvious misalignment and turning the wheel has no affect on it. It definitely is chirping and not squeal. I would suspect a bad bearing but I would expect that noise to be present even after the engine is warm. BTW the car has 66,000 miles on it; most of which are highway.

NOTHING about the sound changes with engine RPM? That must mean you only hear it when the car is moving down the road? Or is it coming from inside? I'm so confused.

I can put a screwdriver on the power steering pump and it isn't that.
steveweis2001
This morning I noticed that the noise was very evident at idle and as I accelerated the noise went away. This is a change from what has been happening. Once the engine was warm the noise disappeared completely.

FusionDiffusion
Okay, I agree that's either belt chirp or bad bearings somewhere. To find out you should spray the RIBBED side of the belt with water. If it's a chirp the noise should go away as explained in this video: Edited December 3, 2012 by FusionDiffusion
steveweis2001
Thanks for the video. It will be this weekend before I will be able to check the belts per the instructions. I'll keep you posted on results.
steveweis2001
My brother-in-law was by with his 2006 Milan with the same engine as my Fusion. He has 86000 miles on his car. It is making the same chirping that mine makes. He changed his belt and it didn't help. I am now guessing power steering pump or water pump. Both engines only make the chirp when the engine is cold.
BRoseJr.
Steve, did you ever resolve the issue? Mine is making the same exact noise with same exact symptoms, except my idler pulley bolt has snapped. Any help is appreciated
