Does new battery need to be vented?

Just replaced the OEM battery on my 2010 SE 4 cylinder with a Diehard. It came with a vent plug and elbow connector. However, I don't see a vent tube in the engine compartment. Is it necessary to use the vent connector or can I do without it? Thanks in advance for the advice.

Most batteries mounted under the hood simply vent through the caps and under the hood. When batteries are mounted in the trunk (Volvo and others) additional venting is needed to keep the fumes from accumulating (hydrogen gas). Often, aftermarket batteries are made for multiple applications, underhood or trunk.

I suspected it was an optional accessory for trunk mounted batteries, but this confirms it. Thank you! Edited by sto620
