mk706_06mazdaspeed6
sync is a must for my next car. it's amazing that Ford was able to develop it with microsoft and maintain exclusivity for a year. it should help drive technophiles to the blue oval. what really shocks me though is that they are introducing it in the refreshed focus.
akirby
what really shocks me though is that they are introducing it in the refreshed focus. Actually the new Taurus will get it first (they're building them now) while the Focus won't debut until this fall. The Focus gets it because of the refresh and because it should appeal to Focus buyers more than other models. Not sure why that is so shocking.
urnews
I must still be living in the dark ages because I just don't get excited about Sync. It seems like a gimmick to me, one that doesn't interest me in the least bit. I guess it is cool for those into being constantly "wired" for communications and such but just having a cell phone handy is fine for me and my wife. Heck, we don't even own an iPod or MP3 player and don't have Sirius radio either. Guess we're just old fuddy duddies.

Others apparently need an incentive. Sad, really.
NaplesBill
I find it amazing when people seem to think they are too good for something like an iPod or anything that young people are interested in. I have the opinion that young people are the best benchmark for what's cool and functional. If we all resist using things that make life easier or enhance it through audio or visual means, then we may as well just be a monkey. It's our ability to adapt and embrace new things that makes us what we are. I think Sync is an excellent move forward for Ford.
Meelaan
Ford should be promoting this a lot more effectively in advertising. Hell, think about how powerful a joint Microsoft/Ford ad would be? Perhaps MS just doesn't want to be associated with Ford right now?

Perhaps MS just doesn't want to be associated with Ford right now? Why would they be promoting something you can't buy yet? It will be widely available later this fall. I don't expect to see a lot of ads until then.

I don't expect to see a lot of ads until then. Why did they build a special website for SYNC already? Maybe because Fall is in three months and marketing is all about buzz. That's why we're even discussing it here. Ford needs all the rare good press juice it can suck out of this desert of an existence. Showing the public that Ford is extremely tech savvy early on will get the bug in their ears so by the time they go to buy that new car, they've got that SYNC feature in their minds already. Ford desparately needs something like this to distinguish themselves from the crowd. If it's done right (and it usually isn't), this type of partnership and technology offering could be a decisive factor in someone's buying decision.

Putting up a website and sending out press releases is entirely different from retail advertising. The press release and website say that this is a future product. And it is generating some buzz along with the Detroit Auto Show announcement. But if you start advertising it on TV then folks will be heading into showrooms looking for it and it's not there yet. It's better to have the vehicles available at the dealership before you start traditional advertising.

It's not smart business to commercially advertise something that is not available yet. There is plenty of time, probably about six months, to begin promoting this feature. As I stated earlier, it's not something that would interest me but I can see where it has value to a certain segment of the population who might be in the market for a new car and the latest in communications technology.

The best news to me is that it is a platform that can accept user controlled software upgrades down the road by simpling downloading the update to a usb stick and plugging it into the Sync usb port. My wife wants the mp3 player compatibility for her ipod and the hands free phone operation is very nice although you need a bluetooth phone. I can easily see future uses as video players and even a software based navigation option (should be much cheaper than the hardware based OEM solutions today because most of the hardware is already in place). And any future bluetooth devices should also be compatible. The fact that Ford gets it a year before anyone else is also good. I'm not too crazy that it's microsoft but what are you gonna do?

Meelaan
Hey, not everything Microsoft is bad. So long as they don't use the 360 board, everything will be dandy. Can you imagine the clock face on the dash flashing orange after a critical failure? LOL

grminiracing
When does the '08 Fusion go into production and when is it expected to be available? Or, when will Ford take an order for an '08? Thanks in advance! Steve
Dyoct
08s are being built. You can order today. SYNC will be launched on the 08 Focus in the fall, not with the Taurus. It will be a later Job option. Got some firsthand experience with it back in May on a Taurus test mule though. I think it's pretty sweet and I really like I can access my iPod on the bigger screen versus shuffling on the player itself. Between Sirius, the audio input jack for my iPod I don't even use a CD anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if we see CD players go the way of the 8 track or cassette player.
