Idler Pulley Bolt Breaking

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I don't own a Ford Fusion but have a 2008 Ford Escape 2.3 Duratec engine. My Idler Pulley broke once. I pointed the problem to my Ford Escape's Power Steering Pump. This is the scenario...you see, I have the "habit" of when I start my Ford Escape I have my left hand on the Steering Wheel. Upon START UP (especially COLD START UP), accidental wiggling of my left hand on the steering wheel causes the Idler Pulley to be pulled by Power Steering Pump.  Now, I start my Escape without my left hand on the Steering Wheel and I have not have Idler pulley braking anymore. Hope this helps!

Escape08 I’ve been looking for someone for months who can tell me how to get a bolt for my 2008 Ford Escape. All parts stores around me say their idler pulleys don’t come with a bolt and even the mechanic at the ford dealership says I need to find someone who can give me the exact bolt size, threading, etc. How do y’all get the new bolt?

  • 8 months later...

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread...  A friend called me and said his '06 Milan power steering went out and charging light came on; I immediately thought "serpentine belt".  I picked one up on the way over to his house and within seconds of popping the hood I could see the belt was off.  I thought 'this will just take a minute'.  I couldn't have been more wrong...

As I get the belt out, I see the idler pulley laying on the plastic skid.  It looked like the bolt just backed out so I ran to the hardware store to get one but upon return, found that the end was still in there so I started searching the Google - which led me here.  I guess it wasn't the most difficult repair I've ever done but man, is it tight between the idler and the frame/body.  I took an earlier suggestion in this thread and got a longer bolt so I could put a nut on the backside.  Fingers are crossed that it holds.  I did have to remove the alternator to get to the backside.  I've never seen fan ducts running to an alternator before.  As I tried to get the belt back on, I ended up breaking the tensioner :( - ran to the store (again) and wrapped up the repair late last night.

Anyway, just wanted to thank all those that contributed to this thread with their experience and tips.  I *hope* I don't have to come back here again but very grateful that you have such an incredible resource.  THANKS again!!

  • 4 weeks later...

05 Escape with 2.3L and the idler mounted to an ear on the block and now on my 4th bolt and this last one only lasted 3 weeks. I noticed that there is a shallow depression on the surface of the block where that standoff bushing looks like it should sit into and mine had gotten boogered up with the previous failures. Seems to me the bolt is supposed to hold the bushing in the depression and the bushing would take the belt load rather bending the bolt. I don't have any way to drill for a bigger bolt as others suggest, so I'm trying JBweld between the bushing and the block. We'll see how that works before I go ahead and invest in a low profile right angle drill.

1/12/2023- My grand has a 2009 Fusion.  Just put her 2nd bolt on which lasted all of 3 days.  Have had it "repaired" twice now to the tune of $1500 per fix.  I'm not messing with it any more.  She loves the car and has found a 2013 but after reading all the comments on here it sounds like Ford never fixed the problem?  Before I hand over a chunk of money for another one (this one is a hatchback) I am asking if any knows if the issue has ever been fixed.  I don't want to buy the same problem.  Thank you for a response.
