Rust on trunk deck lid

I have a 2010 Fusion and today I noticed "paint bubbling" and rust developing underneath the the piece of chrome on the trunk lid just above where they license plate is. I took it into the dealer and they took pictures to send to Ford. You actually have to bend down to see the rust but it is there. Was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem. Thank you.

Just an update,. The car is in the body shop and will be repaired by Ford. I had one month left on my 3 year warranty so I guess I lucked out by finding this problem. I was told by the body shop that he has seen this on other Fusions and the problem is when the chrome and the piece just below that are installed at the factory, it can "cut" into the paint when tightened. Not all Fusions have this problem but it can happen so all 2010 owners should check it out. Have a good day!

I bought my 2009 SEL new in July of 2009. It now has 62,000 miles on it. So the 3 year 36,000 mile warranty does not apply. I think there is some sort of "rust through" warranty in place but I think they would say this does not apply "yet". Thoughts anyone?

The corrosion warranty is 5 years/unlimited mileage:

Your vehicle’s body sheet metal panels are covered for an extended

Corrosion Coverage Period, which lasts for five years, regardless of miles
driven. The extended warranty coverage only applies if a body sheet
metal panel becomes perforated due to corrosion during normal use due
to a manufacturing defect in factory-supplied materials or factory
workmanship. For damage caused by airborne material (environmental
fallout) where there is no factory-related defect involved and therefore
no warranty − our policy is to provide free repair of paint damage due to
the airborne material for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever occurs
first.

I assume what they mean by "it doesn't apply yet" is that the sheet metal hasn't completely rusted through and isn't perforated yet. Seems kind of silly to me.

Unfortunately, the rust warranty is a "rust perforation" warranty, meaning that the panel must have rusted through before it applies.

Had this on my wife's 2010 Sport Blue Sport.

Took off the inside trunk trim (gotta love those clips!!) to take off the chrome molding.

The pull handle has torx screws (be careful not to strip them).

Odd thing is, the screws holding it down are stationary and you have to pull out on the molding to get it off.

As you're doing it, there are also 2 white plastic lock clips that you have to depress to get the molding to continue to come off.

Taped off the area, sanded off the rust (it turned out to be a pea size area), put on the rust neutralizer and painted 4 coats.

Before I placed back the molding, I put a bit of foam cushioning to keep the paint from being dug into again.

Will blend in the paint better once it gets a good chance to dry. :)

Looking at my 2011, there appear to be some bubbles at the upper left and right corners, just at where the trim comes near the paint (but doesn't seem to touch it.). When the weather gets a bit better, I may see about removing the trim to see if there is any more. I did notice that when I was pushing a bit near the center, there did appear to be some foam that was squeezing out a bit. I don't know if that is something new for 2011, or maybe because I have the back-up camera. I thought some paint was peeling up, but pushing on it seemed solid. It seems as if the metal under the trim is shaped a bit like this?

Well I am currently 'in discussion' with Ford over this issue.

My high mileage 2010 Sport has corroded and holed on the trunk lid and roof in front of the sunroof. My dealer said it should be covered under the 5 year unlimited mileage warranty but then informed me that the warranty start date was 9th June 2009! Therefor at 5 years and 1 month the warrantly had ended.

I have contacted Ford Canada's Relationship Centre but they won't budge. My top of the range, all options (minus navigation) 2010 car was built in February 2009, delivered to the dealer on 9th June 2009 and registered to me on 9th September 2009.

I'm not sure what to do next but I refuse to pay over $1500 CAN to fix this mess on what I see as a 4.5 year old car.
